match the closing laps effort from
Bouzanne, who was gelling back into
form after a serious crash in Finland at
the end of last year.
Sadly the rain was back for the
250cc race where two Kawasakis , ridden by Akihiko Kyohara and Barry
Ditchburn filled first and third places
on the practice leaderboard, and
champion Walter Villa was second
best!
But th e weather didn 't spoil the
race. in fact it made it! Walter Villa
slow to get awa y was ahead of the pack
at the end of the first lap , with
Kyohara second. Pekka Nurmi, then
" Finn on a Yamaha third. Christ ian
Sarron, fourth . Kork Ball ington fift h
_ a nd Leif Gustafsson sixth.
Un lu cky Barry Ditchburn was
already in trouble . the circuit was still
like a skat ing rink . and he was forc ed
to take to the grass at the treacherous
Sachs curve at the end of that lap.
It lost him a lot of ground. and he
was never able to get back on terms
with the leaders.
The slippery track caught Villa out,
100 . H ,' slid off without injury at ' the
first chicane on the third lap , and the
race was wide open.
Villa 's departure left Kyohara in the
lead. but Sarron making the most of
his weekend's leave from the army
swiftly closed the gap. and on the
seventh lap took the lead. Sarron used
the drying track to his advantage, and
1 ,?~ned a. good lead. but the Kawasaki
was qu icke r , and the Japanese
newcomer almost judged his effort
right, but though he had taken the
lead when the pa ir appeared in the
stadi um for the last time . Sarron
outrode him in the S bend, and was far
enough in front to hold off th e

Third home was Uncini , apparently
none the worse for his high speed
Austrian GP tumble, and fellow coun tryman Venicio Salmi was fourth , just
two seconds ahead of another thrilling
battle.
It had started as a six man dice.but
it had been trimmed down to just
three men at the flag. Pekka Nurmi
beat Kork BaBington and Tom
Herron to the line . Just two fifths of a
second separated the trio, and for the
latter half of the race they were going
at it.
One of those to miss out was Ger man cham pion Hans Schwe iger who
took over the spare works Kawasak i_

The kind of goggles you wear doesn't
guarantee you'll win, but when the
going gets tough. it sure helps to know
your goggles will stand up to the stuff,
being thrown in your face. That's why
