It was thought a t first that a rider in the B or C class inigh t ta ke the overall tr ophies from the A riders who bore the fu ll b ru nt of the rough te rra in : ho weve r m ost of the experts e it her fou nd ways arou nd or struggled t hroug h a nd we re soo n in the lea d again . T he gas c heck was 46 m iles ou t a nd th e cou rse was more conservative for th e nex t 20 m iles o r so - a lot of fire road . But as the sa me tim e th e ra in bega n to fa ll and it beca me co lde r and then it bega n to ha il. H a il p ett et s whipping into o ne's face di scouraged speed , bu t so me rid e rs co u ld h a ndle it never the less. T he pace slowed before th e fi nis h as t he trai l entered t he great d ismal swa mp - a stretc h of mud hol es wh ich m ig h t have been the scene fo r ca noe ra ces . One hole in pa rticu lar cla imed a high to ll of watered out machin es and d oused c nd u ro riders . There was a slippery log before th e pool and it was e asy to nose dive from the log into the wat e r when r e flexes are n umbed from the co ld and ha nd / eve coordination is sloppy . More than ~ few riders were . hrought to a sto p just a few miles fr om th e e nd a nd had to wait for the sweepers . The co u rse finish e d up with a sp rint through th e pines a nd a short jog up th e rid ge wh ere th e camp sit e was loc a ted. It had been a da y of high speed av e rages. and nearly impassab le obstac les. More riders g o t back to ca m p by wa y of escape routes t han a ctua lly finis hed .
