In front of over 17,000 motocross fans, Team Honda's Marty Smith and J im Pomeroy swept to a first and second overall at the May 1, Southwick .Mass , 250cc National. Their feat duplicated the Smith/Pomeroy Honda sweep of the Hangtown 250cc National Championship opener only three weeks before. The track in Southwick was sandy, dry and so demanding in nature that nearly all of the riders fell at one time or another during the two 40-minute motos. Smith led the first moto from early on. Then, a momentary fall dropped Marty to second, just in front of Pomeroy. Both 8 riders pressed hard, but time ran out .) . before they could recapture the lead for} Team Honda. In moto two, Pomeroy led from the start with Smith hot on his heels. Team . Honda's Tommy Croft (fourth in the first moto ) trailed Smith in third. All Team :1 Honda riders were aboard their RC-250) factory bikes. As the bright red Honda "freight train" ran off with the moto, -1 others were left to scrap for the remaining positions.
