Bell overtook seco nd fro m Miller and set out after Weinert. O n the wh ite flag la p. Weinert was sti ll in t hc lea d . but Bell pu lled a long sid e him goi ng in to th e dow n h ill sweepe r. O n a track th a t on ly "ffprs one fas t lim' . the two riders bumped together with Weinert go ing down. T he ' J am mer" was up in a flas h a nd finished second fo r a 1·2 score for second overall behind Bell 's 2·1 fin ishes. Steve Rh yan and his Com petition Cycles KTM ha d worked through traffic to ge t to th ird , th en he moved a head of Montgomery. At this po int th e leaders were: Bell, Rh yan , Montgomery, Gerig . Fr itz Schl egal (Mai) . Steele, a nd Bob Maxw ell (Bul). O n th e last la p Sch lega l swoo ped by Gerig to get fourth . Be ll. Rh yan and Montgomery were a head of him . By th e time th e seco nd moto got go ing th e mud was severa l inc hes deep in th e low p ans of th e track . The rid ers wer e at thi s point very ca utio us a n d very muddy , Gerig got t he holeshot wit h Be ll, Rh ya n and Ortiz followi ng . Bell (DC Yam ) and Ra nd y Hess (FMF Hon ) were firs t arou nd the first turn . Ga r Ogden (FMF). Mike Palhegyi (Hus) a nd Steve Ba rtley ( Yam) were nex t. Hess went down in th e first lap ; the t rack a t th is point was incr ed ibly hard for th e 125s to maneu ver let a lone rer the riders to sta y vii lOp of he bikes. Bell and Ogden rem a ined the lead ers u nti l Ogd en went dow n at th e to p of the u phill. Rh ya n took seco nd, but Bell had a 40-secon d lead , Palhegyi fin ish ed th ird . Pet e r and T on y Wanket wer e rid in g th e first 125s to finish . Bell a nd Steele got sta rted first in th e seco nd moto to sq uish a ro und the shorten ed track . T he uphill , downhill an d th e gu lly sec t ion had been cu t out. As it was th e rid ers fou nd it next to impossib le to ge t up any slight incline . If th ey happen ed to stall th er e was no c ha nce of getting re -sta rted un less they slid to th e bot tom a nd th en tri ed to get go ing . Steele got arou nd Bell. Bill Cha pi n . r id i ng a C ro wn Cy cle Yamaha , got a bad sta n bu t wor ked his way up to third a nd stayed th<;te for a few laps. Jerry Stewart (Yam) and Pa lhegyi pu shed Chapin back severa l pla ces to fini sh th ird and fourt h . Stee le fini shed th e race a head of Bell, but Bell was credi ted with th e overa l win .
