two flat tires . One was changed. the other went flat on the last loop. Doug Winchell finished eighth after prepping his monoshoc k by himself and then discovering it didn't work. Scot Duncan (250 , Yam) rode the Novice race in the morning. finishing second and winning the 250 class . That was his final transfer to amateur. so he rode the Amateur/Expert race as well. He finished ninth and was first 250 Amateur . Mike Cole (250 Hus) rounded out the top ten . Tim Plant (175 DMG) led the 0-200 class-for much of the race only to have his bike's forks come apart and crash heavily. Plant was alright. but the class money went to Brad Henson (175 Yam) . Bill Saltzman (390 Hus) won the Junior/Senior class, and Gus Pau ll (400 Yam) won the Senior class for the umpteenth straight time. The morning race for 250 and Open Novices went to Mark Force (400 Yam), who took the lead early in the race. Duncan moved from a ninth row sta rt to finish second. A pair of 250 KTMs ridden by Mike Capello and . Ma rk Mou llet took t hir d a nd fourth . Unofficia lly. Ed Wald heim (400 KT M) won the J u nior/ Sen io r class a t ninth ove ra ll. Saturday's races went 60 miles. In the potpourri of 0-200 Novices , Senior a n d Powder Puff Novices . Senior Dwight Michener (400 Yam) took full advantage of his first row start and led all three loops . Finishing second was another Senior, Ivan Summers (400 Yam) . Bob Stokoe completed the Senior class sweep of the race, finishing third on a 370 Suzuki. Eddie Ito (125 Yam) was the first small -bore rider to finish . edging out Mike Willis (125 Suz) and Chris Duncan (Scot's brother. 100 Yam) . Novice Nona Richardson (2 50 KTM) beat Amateur Lori Fanner (175 CvA ) by five seconds to win the Powder Puff money and contingencies. Ray Donaldson (400 Yam), a Junior/Senior Beginner. won the 250 , Open and Senior Beginner race , acing out Michael Reed (360 Hus) , who was first across the line , on .the elapsed time. R ic hard Haseltine (250 C·A) won the 250 class , whi le Dick Milburn (370 Suz) did likewise among the Seniors. Craig J o hnso n (125 Yam) was the first into the finish in the 0-200 . Begi n ner race , but Robert " Bea r" Bru no ( IT175 Yam) took th e overa ll win on elapsed time . Tim F uller (125 Yam), like the first two a resident of the Cal City/Mojave _a rea , finished third . Wendy Dooley (250 Hon) won the Begi n ner Powder Puff class for the second race in a row . In the Mini class, Donnie Morrison (Yam) and Kelly Kline (likewise) were on each other's tail for the entire race, wit h Morrison winning by 10 seconds. T he expected onslaught of T Z750s failed to show . but Dennis Greene entered a 900cc Harley -Davidson engine housed in a C&J frame . The bike. built by Harley, is entered in the Baja 500 with Greene and Lee Scheffers aboard , and is capable of 130 m .p.h . speeds. Greene passed riders at a tremendous clip before shattering a piston. " Road race" was the term most riders used to describe the course. which was laid out on fireroa ds and asphalt su rrounding Ca liforn ia Ci ty. As the weekend p rogressed large powder holes appeared in th e ro ads , and much of t he co u rse go t p retty rough . The first few miles were well watered; the wind kept the d ust to a tolera ble level on the rest of the course. T here was over $5 .000 cash and contingencies for this event, whic h added to the confusion a nd protests over the overall winner. • Unofficia l results in Results Section.
