The immediate impressio n was the Klinzman n had slowed. but a ctuall y Ma m ola had turned a n u noffic ia l 1: 5~.5. with Klinzm ann and Garoutte turning 1:55s. (The existing track record had bee n se t by David Emde last summer a t 1:56.) Mamola went on to win by four seconds with "Klinzmann hard p ressed by Garoutte. Steve Sizelove won 41 0 Production after two red flags d u e to cr ashing and carnage in the pack. Bo th times that the race was red flagged . Sizelove had the lead. and the results were finally declared offcial after only three fu ll laps of racing. The oil . gas and scratch marks left behind from the 410 Production disaster (o ne est imate ha d 10 riders crashing) caused large sections of the course to be pyloned off. which made the new lap records set later in 250 GP even m o re impressive. • Resu lts in Resu lts Sect io n . Zollie Berenyi f lies in Old Timers' ., 'Hangtown Hangover" By John Therriault PLYM OUTH. CA. APR. 16·17 T his was the first ann ua l "Ha ngtown Hangover National" held by the Sierra Old Timers and with help from the Dirt Diggers. It was a two day affa ir . with.more than 150 Old T imers turning out : The Old Timers ran three 20-minute motos Saturday and Sunday. on the same cou rse as the Pros did the week end before. The top story of the weekend . was in the Masters class. Zollie Berenyi came all the way down from Canada . to be participant in this event. Zollie arrived late Saturday and missed his first mota . R o n Miller (Yam) , from Bakersfield . won the first rnoto. Zollie took his CZ to first place, in the two remaining motos and Miller taking th e second spot. On Sunday, the two were going at it again , Zollie and Miller, but Miller proved to be no match for the fast Canadian . Zollie won three straight rnotos that day . for a total of. five for the weekend . To fall in the O ld Timers bracke t. you must be 40 years-p lus old. Zo llie Berenyi, doesn't look a day older than ~O . He was turning some lap times as fast as th e Pros did last weekend . Rumors were that , Zollie is ranked eighth nation all y in Cana d a and his . son is ranked th ird . As the points were totaled~for the two days, th e eventua l winner in the Master class was Ron Miller (Yam) and finishing se cond was Zollie Beren yi (CZ), because he DNS (d id not sta rt) in the first mota. • Results in Resu lts Section . Bert Stephens coming of age at D·3Sn By Cosmic Cat & CO. VISALIA , CA , APR. 16 Bert St ephens (Ya m ) took on all comers tonight at the AMA D-35 TT at Visalia . Stephens. wh o rides the 100 and 250 Junior cla ss. picked up both of th e firs t pla ce trophies in each of the classes. In the 100 Junior main . Stephens moved into third on la p two when second placer Ra nd y Lowe (Yam) and third place man Trampus Bettencourt (Su z) tangled in the first turn and went down . Leader Kevin Cox (Suz ) took a spill in the firs t tum of lap three and Stephens moved into the lead when he passed Tim Martin (Ya m) on the same lap . Stephens powered on to the win followed by Martin and Ro bert Torres (Yam) . Stephens la ter took the 250 Ju nior win and in seco nd again was Martin . Harry Bo u d a k a in (Suz) finished third . Dean Snell (Yam) took the Mini Junior hol eshot but had th e lead taken . aw ay by Craig Johnson (Suz) in the righthander. Johnson started pulling away on lap two and Ryan Land (Yam ) tried to snatc h seco nd from Snell . in the sweeper but failed . Johnson took the win and Snell managed to creep away from Land for seco nd . Kenny McFerrin came from fourth and almost took third from Land but Land held the position by inches. Lots of riders started from the penalty lin e tonight as a result of jumping the flag. After the 250 Experts jumped three or four times, Rodney Sullivan (Yam ) was ordered back. Sullivan at first refused . but eve nt ua lly took his place on the penalty line . Scott Podergois ( Bu l) shot to the earl y lead and wa s immediately running away . Sullivan meanwhi le wasted no time in maki ng u p lost distance . Starti ng the third lap , Su lliva n was already in third and was closing on Podergois. T hen lea ving th e sweeper, Sulli van's fantasti c cha rge from th e back ended when his bike lost fir e . Pod ergois went on to th e Win followe d by Scot t Cude ( Yam) a nd J ames Crisp (Suz).
