Bot h Niday and Bu r ke rode Su zukis to victory with Nid ay winning th e Min i. ' 100 J u nior. and 125 J u nior classes. Burke rod e to victory in 125 and 250 Expert competition . A lack of ra in all week turned th e Pittsburg tra ck in to a dust bowl. T he day dawned hot . windy. and dusty with above no rmal temperatures in t he 80 '5. m akin g cond it ions almost )unbearable. The day's racing went on despi te 'these problems wit h th e 125 Juniors on th e lin e with th e largest class of th e day. Shannon Niday (Suz). one of th e hottest Juniors in Kansas . Oklahoma ' and Missou ri. gra bbed the holeshot ahead of David WiIliams (Ya m ) and Rex Hudgins (Suz). Fourth and fifth spots were being hotl y co n tes ted by , Mike Bryant (Ya m) a nd Tim Trou pe (Ya m ). Ni day bega n st retch ing h is lead after t he first la p and positi ons stayed th a t way unti l. with two la ps to go . N iday perform ed a slo w. easy slide-out. Befor e he co uld rejoi n th e race. both W iIliams a nd Hud gins ha d gotten by. Nid ay was now despe rate in his attem pt to catch up wit h th e two lea ders. He tried ha rd , b ut tim e ra n ou t a nd he had to sett le for th ird . T he second m oto sta rted much th e same as th e firs t with Ni day again pulling the rest of the ride rs off th e line with Hudgins seco nd. Williams th ird . Bryant fou rth . N ida y was reall y ' out for th e win t his tim e a nd it showed as he stretch ed his lead to nearly 10 seconds. Hughey Morton (Yam) go t hot and p a ssed both Bryant an d Will iams to mov e into third . Niday took th e checkered flag . eas ily ahead of Hudgins. Morton . W illiams. and Bryant . T he nex t class of th e d ay. the 125 Experts. proved to be one of th e mo st exciting . As th e sta rt ing ga te dropped for th e first mot a . Stan Coope r (Suz) a nd Di ck You ng (S uz) sh a red th e holeshot a hea d of Kenny Da wson (Suz ) and Joe Bu rke (Suz) . Bu rke went right to work in his d rive to the front by passi ng Dawson nea r the end of the first lap. By the thi rd lap . Burke closed on Young as they both swept by Cooper with Young in the lead. Burke seco nd. Cooper' th ird. Behind th em . Dawson and Dave Gins (Suz) fou ght it out for fourth. Right away. Young and Bu rk e es t ablis he d their superiority over the other riders b y st retchi ng their lead as Cooper faded to a d istant t hi rd . Burke sta yed right on Young's rear wheel . looking for a place to pass. but Young never gave him th a t chance as he kept his lead to the checkered flag. Burke finished sec ond and Cooper third . With th e overaIl win hanging in the balance, the second mota flew off th e lin e with Dawson getting the hol eshot,» followed closely by Young . Further back in third and fourth wer e Girts and Burke. Positions changed fast on th e fir st lap as Young b lew by Dawson . with Bu rke doing the same to Girts. On the second lap . Burke moved into second . sti ll some d ist a n ce behind Young. Behind th e leaders . Cooper was making up lost ground from a bad start by moving in to fifth to challenge Girts . The action behind th e leaders was fast and furious all d ay lon g . but - most of th e attention gathered around th e fight for th e lead. By th e h al fwa y poi nt . Burke had closed rig ht up on Young . bu t instea d of tryin g to pass quick ly. he played th e wai ting ga me. waiting for Young to tire or m ake a m ista ke. H is pl an worked whe n . wit h less th an one lap to go . Burke p assed You ng goi ng into a fast sweeper 10 ta ke t he lead . Burke took the win with You ng second . Da wson third . Coo per fourth . and Gins fifth . By far the best cla ss of t he d ay was the 25 0 Expert. T he ra cin g was reaIly heavy as nearly every lap showed a d iffe re n t posit ion change . J erry Crutch er (Yam ) took the inside lin e in th e first turn of the first moto and gr a b bed th e lead. Kevin Dooley (Pen). Joe Burke (Su z). and Scott Milner (Suz) were fighting it out for second with R . J. Wahlberg (Suz ) back in fifth. Burke passed Dooley on the first lap to cha llenge Crutcher. who had a sizeable lead. In one la p . Burke made up a ll the ground separating th e two rid ers. He pulled up beside Crutcher over a fast jump and landed with the pow er on to pull away from Crutcher. With the battle for the lead going on up from . practicall y no on e noti ced th at Dan J oh nson (Mai) had moved up to fourt h by passing Wahl berg in a tight turn . Th e n J ohnson closed grou nd on Dool ey in th ird a nd got by as Dooley cras hed on a back section of tra ck . By th e en d of the mota . no one was even in sigh t as Burke took t he checke red with Crutch er and Johnson following. A red Maico ridden by J eff Boring (Mai) led th e second mota into th e first t u rn wi t h the eve r -p rese nt Burke seco nd . In third was Miln er . being pressed h ard by Jo hnson . On the seco nd la p . Burke flew by Boring to ta ke th e lead as Johnson passed Milner for thi rd . Milner dropped yet another pl a ce wh en Crut ch er m oved in to fou rt h. J ohnson was really flying thi s rn oto as he pa ssed Boring for seco nd and gai ned gro und on Burke . But Burke was in complete con trol of th e lead a nd gassed it to stay a head of J ohnson. Beh ind th e two leaders. th ere was a battle for fifth as Mi lner and Doo ley went at it until Dooley dropped ba ck . Ah ead of Milner .
