Alex Jorgensen grabbed the third heat lead from Paul Bostro m on lap three . Bostro m stayed close and pressured Jorgensen taking the lead back in th e first turn of the last lap . Entering the fou rt h turn, Bostro m broke. giving Jorgensen the win . Edd ie W irth and Bob Sca lly finis h second and third whi le one- time leader Bostrom coasted to fourth . Rookie Steve Fo rtune (Yarn) was the fro nt runner of t he se mi bUI that was short lived as Billy Oliver (H-D) took over the fron t spot leaving the fourth turn of lap two . From there , Oliver held off Fortune to lake the win and Art Re ed finished third . laking th e pos ition on lap four. Jorgensen .pu t the familiar red Norton ou t front early in the main . but not far beh ind were Gennai , Ekl und (who shot from fift h to th ird ou t of th e second turn ). Some of the hillclirnb artists to attempt the NASA -rocketship -to. the-moon-hill included 50 · year.old John Lomanto _a nd Ron True who showed how to go Over the top io style in what had to be record speed. It was the first run at the upper ranch of Hollister HilIs in six years and now that the facility is available for clubs to rent . it should become m ore ....-idely used. The hill itself was 380 feet long and d idn't look too tough . but was just that , tough . The lines changed from one side to the other as the sandy tractio n showed no mercy to the un wa ry . Winning the 250 Novice class in his first try at hi llclimbing was Jim Felice on a Jensen Cycl e Suz uki. Filice didn't make it over th e top , but managed to mis s only by a few feet . Filice beat out Brian Smith a nd Ru eb en Marques. I Dick Derosa proved his worthiness of his Number Three Blu e Plate by winning the 250 a nd 400 Expert classes. When challenged to try the top without a 'paddle tire , he did and had th e best time for th e lightweights . Larry Silva stood his ground well for the second spot: . As the classes got bigger. lots of TT500 Yarnah as were entered. The clocks got used and Ron Squires was one of the first in the eight-second · bracket along with Paul Pearson. who was trying out the Sam Arena H -D for his first hillclimb . H e won ' the Open Novice class with ease at 8.892 seconds o n his second-ever try . Squires won the 600 Expert class with a 8.688 clocking over Rex H ovey. J oh n Lo rna n to produced a pair of ancient Triumph twins after a I fl-yea r lay -off but d idn't show any signs of aging. win ni ng the 650 Expert ove r Larry Chandl er. Ron T rue tu rned in a pa ir of low eigh t -seco nd runs for top 750 Expert, beating ou t second- place Bob T errell by .5 seconds. I n O pen Competition he smoked the hill for a 7.989 time .
