Rand Area clean-up survives boycotts By Terry Rezek RED MTN. , CA . A P R . 2-3 It 's rema rk ab le that thi s year's Bureau of Land Management ( B L M) -spo n so re d clean -u p came off a t all. Two major com peting events at Long Beach a nd Riverside , lat e pullou ts of support by co-sponsors CORVA and M.O . R .E. g loo my skies a nd p redictions of offroad repression fro m W ashingt on sho u ld have sou nded the death kn ell fo r any coo pe ra tive venture between th e go ver nment and the recr eat iona l publ ic. However , by 9 :00 Saturday morning , BLM representatives were enth usias tica lly reporting as many as 250 people present and willing to work. The workers wer e immedia tely dispatched to one of the ha lf-d ozen a re as that the BLM had chosen as priority sit es for trash removal. That , removal ran the gamut from sim p ly pi cking up omnipresent beer cans to cutting up abandoned autos or even tearing down tottering> old m in e shacks. Scattered a mongst the d ebris were some not so trashy items in noc u o us sl ips of paper w ith numb ers co rres p o n di n g to an assortment of m ore tha n 100 prizes, rangi ng from quarts of o il to tires and eve n full dune buggy he ader sets. Contin gen cies no t " d iscovered " were given out Sa turd ay night as "outd oor" prizes. BLM per sonnel mad e sure that everyo ne received many, m any tick~ts fo r tha t drawing . About th e only disappointed people were some young girls who couldn't figure what to d o with plastic Yamaha fenders . That dilema was resolved wh en som eo ne suggested that they find some boys with Yamahas a nd see what cou ld be worked ou t. An in credible am ount of work was done . My personal est im a te , based o n the capacity of 8x8x30-foot dumpst er , is tha t excess of 25 tons of trash was removed that day. I was really di sappointed in the lack of participation by organized bik e clu bs. I realiz e that they feel betrayed by theBLM heirarch y in Washington , bu t it 's important to recognize ' the d iffe r en ce b et we en those ivorytow er ed policy makers a nd th e d istrict people. Dick Harlow and hi s sta ff a re workin g hard o n the behalf of off roaders and for the co n t i n ued recr eational life of the desert . It see ms hypocriti cal to cl ai m to love the desert and not be willing to hel p kee p it clea n . This see ms to ba a good place to commend to those wh o wer e there ; es peci a lly the Sandblasters from Ridgecrest a nd the Desert Turkeys, the latter incl ud ing all the members of th Snyder , O 'Hara a nd Ashl ock families. I saw a very few more club jerseys in th e distance but co uldn't tell who they were . Much credit for a good job must also go to Girl Scout Cadette Troop 206 fr om China Lake' wh o set a fine example for the m en to try to em ula te with their good humor and unstintin g hard work . Saturday night saw, in addition to . the prize drawing .m entioned , th e showing of a Walt Disney movie , "Charlie , the Fri endly Cougar ," a bonfire fr om so me of t he wood collec te d during th e cleanup , and a visit by Ronald McDonald and his lovely assista n t.
