By Gary Laudig LUCER NE VA LLEY, CA , APR. 17 Bruce Ogilvie and his orange Harley-Davidson 250 shot into an eight-second lead right off the start of the Rovers M.e. AMA D-37 Boner Run Hare and Hound at Soggy Dry Lake. Ogilvie 14 and the racers he led were covered with pollen from p urple wildflowers growing a foot deep on the bomb run . . The sou nd of bikes echoed down through Victor Pass as the racers ran by the entrance on their way around the mountain leading into the rollers and sandwash beyond. Bruce Ogilvie held his eight-second lead over Chuck Pettigrew, with Don Wallingsford third overall, first Heavyweight Amateur. Fourth was Mike Edmonson, then Ron Bebo , Bob Doig and Ed Zarp. John Walkins of Desert M.C . was next with Glen Brown and Ray Alexander rounding out the top 10. First Amateur 250 was John Prater. Jr. followed by second Expert 250 Tim Edmonson . Jim Brown whizzed by at lucky 13th spot, thinking he would be lonesome with Payton and Schumaker out, but Don Torgenson, five bikes back, was kee ping Brown honest. Right behind Brown were the first three Seniors, Ea rl Roeseler , Allen Johnson and Don Ogilvie, wit h David Rogaczewski tryi ng like mad to get by. . The No vice/Beginner race got under way on schedule. Wasting no . time in p roving th e shortest distance between two po ints is a straig h t line, Eric Dat tola blasted his ne w IT175 past th e bomb , through the rock and roll section (scattered roc ks on the rollers) and into the wash leading second bike rider Jerry Monson, first 250. Eddie Ogden , going very fast also. was second "C" bike, third overall. p. g Ken Makos, who should .get a district -plate, was nexr . ifollowed by last week's winner. Steve Nickolson (Bill Saltzman Hus), the first Heavyweight through . Nickolson 's competition was right be hind - John Waggener , Sam Soule and J . Bustamente. Second 250 was Gary Covington running ninth. Gregg Pagan. third 250. was 10th. Dattola and Ogden had the "C " bike battle to themselves as third spot was Vic Salles , 16 bikes back. Dave Quinrard on a PE370 used his bike's headlight asan aid in the dust. The course cut out from Victor Pass across some used trails, then some rollers, up into a saddJeback uphill dropping down onto a good fire road , Edmonson by this time had gotten by Wallingsford and Pettigrew and began dicing with Ogilvie. In fact, they both diced by the place where the course turned off to the right toward the foothills. Finding the rib bon before they lost any positions, the two raced across the ha rd red rollers into the black sand sandwash that has the re putation of being a real goggle fogger. Roger Toubeaux, runni ng second 250 Amateur a rou nd 21st overall, worked his way th rough the wash, lookin g down mostly as the qu ickness of turns and numerous rocks d idn't a llow sightseei ng. Toubeaux looked up just in time to see the stee p beige sand d une leading out of the wash . Dumping down a gear and pegging the throttle, he just ma de it over the crest without using any legwork.
