Win ner Dale Boller. (Below) Just splashing along on a pleasant Sunday ride. By Larry Langley GORMAN, CA, APR. 17 Cycle Magazine editor Dale Boller proved that journalists can be competitive by beating a select field of 300 AMA District 37 enduro enthusiasts at the Checkpoints M.C. Jubilee Enduro. The enduro was held in the Las Padres National Forest nea r Gorman. a first in the area . The area is very popular with the riders as a play area so the club thought why not an enduro? With very helpful cooperation from the forest service, the enduro came to be . However. due to limited camping at Gold Hill. entries had to be limited to only 300 riders. Many of the riders knew the area like the back of their hand since they ride there every week. Too fast on the goat trails and passing would become a major problem. not to mention a bunch of riders would probably end up off the trails. Off the trails in some sections mean a long way dow n . T he Checkpoints wisely decided to start the riders "A " riders first, "B" next and finally the "C" class . It worked out very well and 1 heard no complaints from "A" riders held up by slower riders. The 12 m.p.h, speed posed problems for many riders. Speedometer error, or more accurately. how well the rider was able to dial in . or correct, his error, turned out to be a very big factor in the enduro. At 12 m.p.h. , a miscalculation of only .1 mi le means a 30 second error. Naturally the Checkpoints had a whole bunch of checks in the slow sections.
