LaPorte, Smith strike . gold in AMA National MXOpener By Dale Brown PLYMOUTH, CA, APR. 10 When the dust had cleared from California's Mother Lode country, works Suzuki rider Danny LaPorte had won both motos of the 125 National, and Team Honda's Marty Smith put 8 t<,Jgethe: two second- place finishes for victory In the 250 National. In both 125 motos, LaPorte came from the pack to take the lead at the . midway point. Both times he battled with a determined Bob "Hurricane" Hannah , who suffered mechanical troubles both times with his new works Yamaha. Jim "Bim bo" Pomeroy and Tony DiStefano both won 250 motos, with Smith right behind them. Fourth and fifth pla ce finishes by Bimbo and Tony D allowed Smith the overall win. Each class had to run two qualifiers and a consolation race to narrow the field to 40 starters. 125 National: Hurricane charges. Richter surprises and laPorte just wins Radical Ron Turner. an FMFsponsored Southern California rider on a recent hot streak. led the 125 pack into the first turn. with Suzuki's Jeff Jennings on his tail. Both LaPorte and Hannah wer e back in the pack, Hannah in the mid-20s.
