T he rid er who was top ovice last yea r shows every p ro mi se of being one of the top Juniors. as Eddie Lawson shot off th e line to lead Ji m Allison a nd T im McWhorter home. In the last ' heat . Travis Perron led off with Craig Armstrong and Shaw n Leipold swa pp ing places. Penon kep t . th e lead. but Armstrong took a ha rd fall in turn fou r th at left him in the middle of the track sta ring straight a hea d. In th e first Expert hea t it was John Allison out front wh ile Bob Sand ers defended his second place fro m the onsla ught s of Walt Foste r . with Foster finall y winning . Things got a bit wild in the nex t heat. Rob Morrison came chargi ng off the line . hooked up with Mike Myers, who was m ind ing his own business, a nd cra shed the m bot h onto th e ha ybales. Rich Wa rren also got ent a ng led a nd the red flag q uic kly came ou t. On th e resta rt. St eve Eklund got the le a d wh ile Dan McWhorter stayed ahead of Steve Fortune and Myers . The Novi ce semi went off withou t much ado ; in fact all night along it was the Juniors and Experts do ing th e entertaining things . Mike Minnig won the semi , with th e rest stringing alon g behind. The Juniors were riotous on th e lin e again and th e sta rt er had to get fir m and put one on t he back row . One reason ea ch Junior was trying so hard is that the top three from this series will be invited to the San Jose mile. Brian Brown took the lead but lost it to Jeff Kerr in a wheel to wheel fight. Brown -then lost second to Gordie Kidd, who had worked through the pack to take the final transfer spot as the flag came down . It was an a ll -Yamaha Trophy Dash. with Allison . Steve Eklund. Art Fredenburgh and McWhorter coming to the line. For a bit it looked like Eklund's race, but Allison got a drive going and passed, winning with a time just half a second off the lap record. Faria got off the line first in the Novice Main , followed by Perkins and Ra iney. Positions were exchanged quickly a nd it was Ra iney out front with Perkins second and Fari a th ird . ' Faria tri ed every line he co u ld to find a way around Perkins; who wou ldn't hear of it a nd held onto seco nd. The Junior Main was a wowser. Rod Sexton took th e lead a nd never lost it . while Lawson tucked in behind h im . Kerr a nd Rod Spenc er wen t at it for a wh ile over thir d place with Spencer th e victory. Ke r r faded an d Tim McW h ort er m o ve d up . As the checke red flag ca me down . Sexton was • jus t barel y fending off La wson . Dan McWhorter and All ison ca me flying off the lin e as the Expert Main started , with Allison getting the lead over McWhorter. Eklund , Sanders and Myers . For a while it was Sanders and Mye rs switching spots before Myers got a grip on fourth and Sanders was passed by Earl Moura!' Up front, McWhorter was challenging Eklund , and by way of response, Eklund started closing on Allison. Allison hung it out a bit more . getting a little ragged in the south turn, where the infamous Ascot hole is. Allison came through the last turn loo king - bu t not actua lly - a little bit over his head. Ekl und was hanging on like a terrier but unable to pass. (R ep orter Maureen L ee commented that aft er all the flap everybody raised last year about Ascot not having bike races this season, it 's up to everybody to support th is series . . .
