Eight riders were allowed to
ride the 250 Beginner/Novice
main event , The winner from
ea ch heat and t he first six riders
from the sem i would be the ones in th e
final race . Don Milam (Hon) easil y
won heat one. It was a photo finish for
secon d place as Barry O'B rien inc he d
in ahead of Nea l H er eth. Dennis Dunn
led hea t two from sta rt to finish . N eal
Hereth pulled th e holeshot in the semi
and left the others in his dust. Ossa mounted Randy Palmer gave Ba rry
O'Brien a real workout . and O 'B rien
cr acked under th e pressure. Ba rry got
int o some trouble and ended up
upended. Nort on Graham was left in
third after O'Brien's boo -boo , Tom
Francis , Patrick Ea ga n . and finally
Barry O'Brien crossed the fin ish line .
and all semi riders transferred to the
main. The 250 Beginner /Novices were
on the lin e for th e main a nd th e two
Beginners had the starting spot on the
hill in front of th e Novices. The fla g
d ropped and the rubber band
sn ap ped. but th e red flag was brought
out after one lap because Eagan was
left sitting on the line. Everyone lined
up again and off they went. Dennis
Dunn. a Beginner. led for a lap but
Can-Am -mounted Neal Hereth soon
stepped in to take control. Slowly bu
surely the Novices began to overtake
the Beginner, Dunn . The Novices ju st
couldn't get around Hereth though.
and h e held h is le ad until t he
checkered fell . T he two 250 trophies
went to Hereth , (n ow a Novice). and
Tom Francis, a Nov ice .
