In the first Open GP race Glover finally got a hole -shot , but charged off into th e dirt for the third tim e when he could n't find his modified brake pedal in time. Whitney Blakeslee blazed through th e pack to ta ke third . Glover finished sixth. Klin zmann had a n easier time of it in bot h 250 GP heats, leaving him time to entertai n t he cro wd by doing wheelies. No t to be ou tdone , however . was Mich ael Marse who a lmos t see med more interested in doing wheelies, than in finis hi ng th ird , behind Bob Hyma n . In the Sideca r events Lorento Masella ca me th rou gh to win both heats , but had on e heart -stopping moment in the first h eat whe n he overtook the side hac k of leaders Woods & Ma ynard as they dov e into the infield , with the Woods/Maynard outfi t having to take to the dirt . John Glover won the first Superstreet race, .but was in the middle of t he pack in th e second heat as the field charged into the bank ing on the third lap. Both Terry Waugh a nd Da vid James hit a patch of oil and went d own like bowling pi ns. Glover (with th ree victories already) decided to save his body and bike for th e up-corning SixHour Race at Ontario , and joined Waugh and James on th e sidelines. Dal e's lu ck th ese past few weeks ha s been rotten . Scott Montgomery grabbed the opportunity to move his 250 Suzuki to the head of the pack of mixed riders . Montgomery just dialed the machine on and took off, leaving the rest of the competition to fight it out among themselves. Mike Palhegyi, looking very stylish on his track eating Husky rode second to Scott. Wes Sutton, sporting Cole Bros. Maico colors , gave Mike a good run for his money. Steve Bartley, Distri ct 38's number on e rider , sta rted th e ra ce at the very ba ck of th e pack only to p ilot his Yama ha to fourth pla ce by th e tim e th e che ckers went ou t. Brian McN amara finished fifth . Fritz Schlege l (CZ) was th e first Open rid er to cross th e finish line in the first moto. John ny Barr (Suz), after getting the holeshot in th e second rnoto, took the first place honors. Mark Van Camp, ridi ng for McKees Cycles had the best finishing positions a nd got the top money when it was all over . J ohnny Barr, Chuck Pettigrew (Mai), Fritz Schlegal, and Kenneth Yarnall (Yam) took the rest of the Open Pro payback. 500 Intermediate Bill Jewell smoked h is brand new Maico around the track to score the top wins in both motos. Billy Keefe (H us) and Pa ul Thede (SO P) followed . 125 Pros and Interm ed iates went around together and it looked for awhile like Corki Moore (MM) was the - man to beat. Moore was back from riding the series in Florida and looking good . FMF rid ers John McGonigal and Ma lcolm McCass y made sure the Red a nd Crimson were a team to contend with. McGonigal kept a ste ady pace, co nsta n tly advancing on the other riders until only Huff H adley (VH) was in front of him . Hadley was riding a rocket and unpassable in the first moto. In the second moto McGonigal was the star as he blew th e doors off every one. He got th e top money. Results in Results Section.
