Dan Aaseth moved up and pitted 15th, moving up 10 posit ions after loop one. Steve Nicholson 'stretched out a good 45-second lead as he headed out to check two. Riding in dust like a veteran , he picked up his lines and passed bikes as he could sense the feel of victory. Brooks had cleared check three and headed for home. Not being abl e to take the same lines as before due to lapped riders . Brooks had everything but an easy time. Pasing it in th e du st took consta nt concentration while breakin g tr ail, hampered by the thought of Dawson back th ere just wait ing for one mistake to enable him to assume the lead. Brooks crested the saddleback, flew down the trail, and all the spectators and pit crews pointed at the winner as .he rounded the hard right tum and flew across the finish line , chalkin g up overall win number six. Less than 20 seconds later, Brooks looked over and said "W ho is that guy?" Dan Dawson, P2, minus a spark arrestor, side cover and air filter , pulled up behind Brooks ' for second overall, second Heavy , and a big grin. Bob Balentine (400 KTM) proved to be the winning combination at the DRA Team Race. Heath Hibbard (400 Yam) found a line just off to th e left of th e bomb which put him just ahead of Bal entine and Phil Stumbo (400 KTM). In an effort to catch Hibbard, Balentine slid off the top of his bike while accelerating out of a ditch. About five miles out, Hibbard's ma chine began seizing . Stumbo moved past Hibbard and his s ick bike for the lead. Balentine maneuvered his way up to second and set his sights on Stumbo. Balentine and Stumbo diced it until a road crossing about a quarter of a mile from the pits, where - Kelly completed the second loop with a good margin over Malocco. Meek came in still running third but dropped out due to an unfortunate incident. This moved Monte Lee and Johnston into third. Brad Henson kept the lightweight team go ing by bringing his bike through in fourth place. The leaders remained the same with the margins between them increasing. Balentine and Kelly were first to the checkered flag with several miles over Stumbo and Malocco. Johnston and Lee rode a good consistent race, finishing third for the day . The first Senior riders were the Amateur team of LaV ern Garton (370 Suz) and Ed Denbow (400 Yam) . The small ·bore team of Jeff Heth (125 Yam) and John McConnell (125 HDn) really did a fine job. Alan Dryden (80 Suz) and Donnie Morrison (80 Yam) had a great combination of rides to put together a class win over Byron Van (80 Yam ) and Mark Heth (80 Yam ). It was a fairly nice 'day for racing and spectating with Big Red , alias the " Easter Bunny, " making his ra cy appearance with bunny suit, cotton ta il, and ears. . The course itself was a big bike course with some soft sand and wide open washes. There was a bit of dust but a good breeze kept visabil ity clear. Balentine leaped ahead. . At th e end of the first loop , Balentin e was barely ahead of Stumbo. Both riders turned their bandoleirs over to their partners. Tom Kelly rode with Balentine and came out of the pits before Stumbo's partner Morgan Malocco (400 Yam). Alan Meek (400 KTM) was next in with q uite a space between himself and Mike johnston (400 KTM).
