MAR . 20 Last year J a ck Penton won th e John Zink Na t io na l e n d u ro h ands down with a score o f 17 a nd the Tulsa Trail Riders were critic ized for mak ing th e run roo diffi cult ca using many B riders to hou r out. J ack pent on won th e 1977 J ohn Zink Nati on al. but not onl y didn't th e B rid e rs hour out : many of th em bu rn ed severa l c hec ks. Rid ing a minute apan on numbers 69 and 70. Penton a nd Dick Burleson wer e th e top rid ers . At th e end of th e run th e numbe rs were Burleson "5 " and Pent on "9" . At th e troph y presentation it was Burl eson " 7" and Pent on " 7". Protests were sent" to the AMA with no cl e a r cu t winn e r. Finall y. the AMA ruled th at Penton won . Su nd ay m orning it looked like th e JZ end u ro ) would be a su pe r run . The weather was perfect. 300 loca l riders were in a good mo od . having fea sted a t t he Black J a ck C ir cuit Award s Banqu et t he night before . T he banquet had been host ed byJ ack l ink ; John Penton a nd Dick Burleson had han d ed out th e a wa rds . Sunday night m any rid ers seco nded Skip Ol son 's sta teme nt; "Good ru n . ridea b le co urse with no road riding. Pan of th e 100 .2 ·mile end u ro was run a t a 24 mph average a ndpa rt at a 12 mph average with an extra 15 minutes added at ea ch of th e two gas Stops. Hence, time keeping ability was as important as riding skills . The trouble started at one of the ea rly checks - it was five m inutes late. The accuracy of th e time at another c hec k was qu estioned in Burleson's protest. Ol son had 10 po ints lost at the ti e breaker by th ou sandths of a seco nd . O versh a d ow e d by th e tim e controversy was t he rest of the Cycle Ea st team. Bo b Pop iel a n d Jim Simmons . Popiel was first in th e Open A- wit h Simmons in third . Avenging his fourt h place finish and som e nasty hurts to his body last yea r, John Penton ca me back to take th e Senior cla ss thi s tim e around . The other Penton riders didn't fare so well. Jim Fogl e came in third and Billy Geier lost his transmission. Can -Am's Kevin Snapp over,came his early starting number (seven) to take th e 200cc A class , but a local rid er , Bill Uzzell . won the Lightweight A titl e .
