Steve Ma rt in (Yam) finall y outlasted Matt No ttenkam per (Suz) in th e Novice 100 . A record turnout of 250 Experts had the crowd on th eir feet. Bu ltaco-rnounted John Gennai took three of four rounds of Ind oor Short Track in the Pacific Northwest ,· winning an ext ra $500 along with the finale at Seattle Coliseum. Gary T onda tried to give Gennai a run for th e bonus bucks but fell in th e Seattle fina l. Portland . OR. March 23 There was trou ble brewing from the first ea rly practi ce. T he promoters had pla nn ed to ru n AMA rules. but it was obvious fro m th e sigh t of 400 Suzukis and 350 ·plus XL Hondas that the 250 rul e wasn't to be for real. Any new sp ecta to r sa w so me fi ne r a ci ng', althou gh the radio ads had indicated som e sort of "mech a nized rollerball ." The Junior /Expert heats were all thrillers . Rick Ho cking easily won the first over R andy Skiver's Can -Am . Gary T onda lined up on th e pole for the second heat and banked around th e first turn in from of Rick Delacv for the win . Dave Hansen won th~ th ird heat with Pat McC aul bowling hi s wa y through th e tenpins for second . J ohn Gennai swooped round four ove r Movin' Mike Caves, who drove across th e co u n try with his pooch . Billy Hofmeister brought out a Minnesota Bult aco to win the fifth heat over Ken Cclorie. When the Novice heats were posted , no indi cation wa s giv en about transfers. One Semi had 16 riders and when th e score rs finally quit , there were no official results. After much badgering from riders a nd family, a suggestion carne from th e audience: How about runnin g th e main from heat finishes ? It went down that way. Sal Hoffman led th e Novice Main most of th e way, but it was Mike Kunsman th e winner on a Martin Cyele Ossa . Hoffman ca ugh t up on the whi te flag la p whe n Kunsman nearly got off whi le tryin g to lap a backrnarker who looked like a refugee fro m th e Vik ings' Special Un it ridi ng with more elbo w th an talent. The Junior /Expert Main lined up with a few spa re bodi es and much co n fusion . Finally th e rid ers agreed on a match race flagged by Rick Hocking and reffed by Randy Skiver. Pat McCaul was th e last man into the main. • Gary Tonda led out a post-crash restart with Hocking pressing. It was a rruckin ' convoy for most . as Mickey Fay moved up for a third . Corvallis. OR.
