MAR . 20 B & B Yamaha-Honda of Victorville sponsored the season opener in honor of 395 Cycle Park's sixth birthday. John Ostrander, President of the promoting TT M .C .. held up practice while' racers joined former em p loyees and retired racers in greeeting old friends and competition. But once Jumping Jo hn dropped th e green flag , it was down to business as usual especially in th e TT cash dash as Chu ck Palmgren took the $25 win from Earl Ro loff aboard a 500 BSA. Winning the 500 cla ss on this fast, smooth track is never easy but today , the lineup included all N ational numb ers and tw o former 395 cham pions, but Palmgren edged th em out in both mains . In sepa ra te Open half mile action , Craig Armstrong took the lead from Mik e Lan ey. Adelanto ace Gary Praster delighted local fans with his win in Open Amateur competition on th e %·m ile TT course: but , in half mile action . Pat Dobbins' trick Triumph took the checkered from Praster . Lee Hales won 250 Expert. . Local l~ds dominated Open Novice competition with Rich Barnes taking both first place trophies and Arnold Hester gaining second in half mile mains while Larry Orr again th ird in TT action . It was Jeff Neeley's day winning everything he entered including the traditional Sweepstakes. Little Danny Perez showed big brothers in two easy lessons how to win trophies by keeping Roger Thompson second in Mini Novice competition. (A bove) Terry Ducker won both 125 Pro motos at Edwards. while (below) Tim Welker did likewise amongst the 250 Pros. In the first lap McCormick d ropped back while Clutter moved up for third a nd Alan Anderson (Suz) took fourth . By the end of the moto a charging Cl u tter passed both Wick and Walker to win. Anderson took second over Mike McGhee (Hon) . Scott Walker once again go t the holeshot with Don Patterson (Yam) and Ken H atcher (Yam) holding down second and thi rd. First mot o winner Russell Clutter had his work cu t out for him, as he got dead last out of th e first comer. .I;ly the thir d lap Clu tt er had worked a ll the way up to second beh in d Pa tt erson . O n the last la p . Clutter got by Pa tterson and went on , to a well-deserved mot o win and first overall. Seco nd went to Mike McGhee and third to Alan An derson. _ . Tim Welker had a n easy time in the first 250 Expert moto, winning with ease over Rodney B r an d (Su z), Fred Griego (RM) , and Craig Osborn (KTM) who 's making a comeback to racing after be ing out for a couple of months due to a broken ankle. Wel ker again got the start in rn o to two. but Bra nd was right on his tail not giving an inch. Brand's pressuring Welker made them build up a giant lea d over third place Osborn . Brand used every move he knew trying to get by Welker, but Welker held out by a mere 10 feet at the finish to take the moto win and first overall. Brand took second overall ahead of Osborn. • Resu lts in Resu lts Section . cheering. For starters. he had a fight on his hands for first with Randy Tysor (Hon) .. Tysor had the holeshot and found Robertson pushing him hard all the way . After several laps of trying . Robertson made it by Tysor and set about lengthen ing his lead . He also had Richard Ising (Yam) to contend, with when Ising moved up to put the heat on . Ro bert son kept his throttle on and in no time at all , he started lapping other riders and had a one mile lead over everyone else. Ising had moved into second , but there was no way he co uld catch Robertson. By th e end of the race Robertson had first , overall sewed -up, " " ...... .o .. . " ... ".. • the 125 Expert holeshot in the first moto. Behind him were George Faber (Yam), Mark Ba rns (Suz). Jim Send leba ch (Yam) , a nd Rick Hulsizer (Yam) . Within the first la p Faber crashed after hitting a stack of car tires while co ming off a jump. Ba rns passed SendIebach a nd the fallen Fa ber for second place. Things stayed the same for the rest of the m ot o except for Rodney Brand (Suz) . who had bee n working up from a bad sta rt , pass ing H ulsize r for fourth at the end of th e moto . In the second moto st art Du cker came out of the first co m er with about a 30 foot lead, followed by Barns , Brand , and Se n d leb a ch . Br a nd quickly put the m ove on Barns for second. Du cker co ntinued to increase his lead while Brand he ld second over a Ba rns-Sendlebach ba ttle for third. Send lebach m anaged to p ass Barns on the last la p to get th ird in the m oto and third overall. There was some good racing a t Corona Fr iday espec ially among the Pros. The 125s .sq u ared off wit h a larger t han usual field and the name of the game was get Marty Miller. Unfortunately for them nobody could although they all gave it a good try. The first moto was a game of follow the leader with the top four riders content to follow Miller around. At . the end of one it was Mattocks , Wolford a nd Guth in the second, third and fourth spots. The ,final go it was again Marty out on top a n d unstoppable. Wolford tucked in behind him for the second with Gut h in third . Miller , not content to rest on his laurels, took on the O pen Pr o class and came up with another do uble wha mmy. Mark Rawley gave h im a good battle in the first mo to , Miller agai n maintained under pressure ,and Ra wley had to settle for the second. Dea n Wilkinson came , u p with the third . T hing got stirred up in the fin a l moto , Miller aga in got th e ho leshot wit h John Mattocks off in seco nd and R a wley in t hird . O n la p three Callaway put the move on Rawley, d ropping him to fourth , but th a t was ' short lived because on la p four Wilkinson -carne out of nowhere a nd passed both Callaway a nd Rawley. and Mark fo llowed suit, passing Callaway, to still hold his fourth. Callaway in th e meantime ha d dropped to sixth and was havi ng his
