Mike Tripe s. was in th e pits without a bik e and calculating th e purse . The Pro classes drew $400 payback . Wit h 241 entries the night . was th e greatest in four yea rs at South Bay in motocross . about .double th e b reak -even draw of March 2. T erry Sh ekell (Yam) won the 125 Pro class wit h Steve Ba rt ley (DG) and George Spec k side-by-side for second at the finis h . Speck had won t he first moto , bu t was edged out by Bart ley for second overall at th e finis h. Rob Norgaard (Kaw) moved up in both motos from fourt h to win over eight riders in the 500 Pro class . He took the lead from Kenny Frost on lap three of six in the second moto . Ed) He had some better than ave rage com peti t ion to race aga inst in 'the Mo ne y TT as Chuck Palmgren was out again and Dave Aldana showed up with a 250cc motocrosser co mplete with kn obbies. Tidwell bla sted off t he line with Dennis Br iggs in second and Pahl~gren in third . By the second la p . Palmgren had passed Br iggs and went looking for Tidwell. Tidwell was long go ne. taking full advantage of the duel between Palmgren and Briggs to get as much distance as he cou ld between himself and Palmgren . Chuck did close the gap but time ran out as Tidwell brought it home. Palmgren was sec o n d . Ten half mile Money riders pulled on to the line to do battle. Ag ain it was T id well with another fantastic start. d rag racing his 250cc Yamaha single into the first turn to get a slight lead on Wayne Ra iney. Tim Mc Whorter locked into thi rd and Marti Halkola fourth . Ra iney. who was com ing off a super win streak at Dayto n a . found out t hat Tidwell was even hott er as he followed hi m to the checkered a nd coll ec ted seco nd pla ce dough . McWhorter was third. Add both 250 Expert TT and half m ile for two more wi re -to-wire vict ories and yo u have a rather ou tstandi ng night for th e 15·year·old Up la nd ace . John Mattocks and Lee H ales were two . three on the TT and Danny Perkins and Don T ortorelli did it on the half mile . Mike Me yers a bsolutely smoked everyone in the Open Amateur/Expert as he made it look easy while everyone else looked like they were working at it. Dan McWhorter picked up second after he battled with Pat Dobbins. who held him in third for three out of the five laps. Robert Pfetzing almost had a triple wi n as he wo n th e 12 5cc Am ateu r/Expert TT and the O pen Novice TT. His streak was broken in the 125 Ama teur/Expert half m ile wh ere he ran into two sc ra pp y youngsters na med Chris Cannon and. Bobby Garabed ian . It was Garabedia n out fi rs t with St eve Ka rst en a nd Ca nnon in th e next two SpOlS. On lap . two . Cannon had passed Karsten and was pressin g Ga ra bedia n. For two la ps the y switched back a nd fort h with Garabedian -geeting th e lead by a ha ir as they crossed the finis h line. O n the fifth la p . C a nno n pu t a move on .
