J ohn Atwood (Ya m) was m ore successfu l ag a ins t M ick ey's brother . Dann y McDougal (Suz) . in the 250 Pro class. Their first moto was all McD ougal's. From sta ll to finish , he had a commanding lead over Atw ood and J im La 'Te ndresse (SUI). T he ne xt m o ro . how c ver. was a differ ent story. McD ougal was off to a poor sta n . wh ile Atwood enjoyed t he number one spot. McDougal tried to clos e th e ga p . bu t crash e d while pu sh ing through the pa ck . Ye t a not her rider from Crown Cy cl e, Mark Lawrence . walked away from the 125 Pro class. His primary com p e titio n was from Atwood (Yam ). wh o was r un n ing two classes . and Mark Ell is (Suz) . Rob Zamora ( Ho n) pull e d th e first hole shor , Lawrence. however , wasted no time in getting arou nd him . Zamora and Ellis cha sed th e Yamaha pilot until about midwa y in t he moto , when th e y both began 10 tir e. T he y dropped back a co u ple of s pa ces an d Atwood a nd Da ve Eu ropkin (H o n) happil y filled their pla ces and finis hed in that order. In t he nex t m or o . Ellis made his bid for fir st. The race finished in that order. Chappy Blose gDl th e seco nd rnoto hol eshot a nd remained untouchable the whole race . The interest turned to the race for second po siti on between three riders - Pa t Imbriale (H us). And y Frola (Mai) and Crawford. All three were in tight - it was anyone's race , Crawford called it his but Imbriale and Frola d idn't give up easily! It was a knobby-to- knobby battle for several laps with Crawford inching by one , then the other. Blose was too far gone to catch and Crawford settled for second. lrn bri ale rode a consistent ra ce to finish third . followed closely by Frola. Overall wins went to Blose. Crawford .. Imbriale, and Hickerson: Suzuki -mounted Dave Crawford got the holeshot ahead of Tucson visitor, Carlos Serrano (Suz) in the first 125 moto, but his luck ran true to form for the day! He had a head-on encounter with a tire not quite off the track . sending him over th e handlebars, into the cacri i, and out of the race . The flying Chicano, now in the lead . flat smoked and finished a lap ahead of the rest of the pack. Chappy Blose (Ho n) came in second with a good lead over Steve Yarborough in third . The seco nd moto sa w Blose with the h o leshor , Andy Frola ( H o n) and Crawford near the front . and Serrano buried back in the pa ck . Serrano charged a nd crashed . cha rged again to fourth . never ca tching the leaders. Blose . in the meant im e . had been build ing up quit e a le ad, but Crawford had finall y moved around hard riding Frola , a nd sta rted closing in . The last lap saw him stuck to Blose's rear wheel. but time had run out due 10 a shortened second rn or o . Blose and Crawford finished o ne-two . Third went to Frola , Serrano fourth, Overall honors went to Blose. Serrano . and Frola. The Open Pro race could have been the hottest race of the day. had Carlos Serrano not lost his clutch , jumped the gate before it ever dropped , and found himself penalized a la I' for the restart of the firs! moto, Bobby Blose. on a County Cycle Maico, sto rm ed into the lead followed by Mike McCan y (SUI) and th e Brawner broth e rs , Randy and Bob ( Ma icos) . Serrano . was way back in last . chasing his runaw ay Huskyl Aft er fina lly ge tt ing into th e saddle. the flying Chicano went over, under. a nd a ro und every bod y in sig ht exce pt Blose . who had a co m m a nd ing lead th e wh ole race . Blose took a well deserved first. Tom Pul ver ( Mai) seco nd , Mik e Blakel y (Ka w) third , and Serrano . in spi te of a o ne lap penalty, fourth. The seco nd m oto was res ta rted after Brad Moll ohan ( Ma i) took a hard fall in the. rock s insid e th e fir st turn and th e a m bu la nce was call ed o nt o the . track . Blose again go t t he holeshot, foll ow ed by Rand y Brawner and Pulver. Serrano. after a bad starl again . cam e banlaiing through the pack and soo n was second behind Blose . In two laps he d evoured the dist ance between them . riding Blose's wheel.
