Entering his second climb of th e yea r , young John DeRosa took lessons from his big brother , Dick, a nd walked off with a firs t pla ce in the Mini class . T wo newcomers, Ted Ridling and Bill Doot y fin ished first a nd second in the 175 cla ss. a nd Don Flower s took over th e 250 Beginner class. Another rid er fairly new to hi llclimbing , Butch Couture , took hom e a third place trophy in th e very tou gh 500 modified cla ss. He had to beat ou t some of the top climbers in Sou th ern California . a nd given time . he ma y just top his class . The Open class ga ve a rather d isappointing , sho wing today; d isa ppointing for th e riders. not th e spec ta to rs. This h ill was JUSt not m ade to handle the weight of th ose big T riu m phs , H arl eys a nd Hnndas. T heir cha ins. exotic fuels and specia l modi fica tions JUSt weren 't enough to ge t them lhrou gh th e rou gh and ruts of the hill. T he to p m an in this class, Ron True. set a high m ark of 303 feet . but th at wasn't en ough to rea ch th e crest. T he on ly other rid er to com e close was Ron Saffel with a m a rk of 300 feet. The rest had to sett le for far less foot age , most of th em in t he low 200s. Now t ha t his hill ha s been topped , Doug Ha ll will begin looking for a new ch a llenge . If he find s on e he thinks is tough enough. he ma y even p lace a bet on the hill. It was Mi ke Minnig who jumped out ahead on his '250cc single with Cra ig Armstrong right behind him .· Armstrong would hav e th e adv antage down the straights with his big Harley a nd lose it to th e quicker 250 t hrough th e turns . T his game cont inue d for four la ps and a ll of a sudden Minnig was out with wh at was lat er di agnosed as a broken clutch .
