Old Gordon "Bomb Run" Schmid had third overall at the second uphill. J ust past the bomb. the area resembled Shadow Mountain European Scramb les area . The racers were pretty limited in passing category. but by the second hill cou ld open it up and see how much "huevos" they had. Fourth and fifth overall were Brent Wallingsford (H us) and Bru ce Ogilvie (H·D). neck-and -nec k going at it as if the finis h line was in sight. Next was Tom Brooks (KTM) . flashing by with Ron Bebo (Yam) . Bob R u tt en (H us). and Dwane Ca rter (TT5 00 Yam) in p ursuit. Garry Conner ro u nde d out th e top ten shoes at the bo mb. After a mile of this the ra cers approached check one at the foot of the fa mo us bottle neck mountain. This year the club chose to run it backwards with two signs at the bottom. Riders had a choice of the "E · Z Way" around the side or the " Fast Way" over the top . The Novice start was delayed . but once underway the riders wasted no time in getting with the program. Leading the "wild bunch" was Scott Dinger of the Desert Rats . Next Was Don Boese (a Rat also). first Heavyweight. First "C" bike and third overall was H usky-rnou nted George Ea rl. Then came Steve Nicholson. Marty O lson . Dave Conner. pie plater Jeff Blan to n , Ken Makos, Dave Thompson and l st Begin ner J . Bustament e completing the top ten . By this time the Experts a nd Ama teu rs had crossed th e m a in road lead ing into Ca l City and fou nd the first seq ue nce of sa nd washes. Roeseler held on to first , b ut the ha rd charging Brooks deci de d he had had enoug h dust a nd moved into seco nd . Dwa ne Caner. wasting no time. charged fro m ninth place up to th ird . Ogilvie and Wa llingsford were still go ing at it handlebar-to -handlebar as Ed Zarp settled in at fifth . Crossing the Randsburg-Mojave din road the racers were starting home for the pits and water. Bob Rutt en pitted running seventh overall . third 250 Expert. Garry Conner was eighth, Charlie Barney ninth and Ron "T he Fox" Bebo 10th. Sandy Robertson , running 12th overall on a 125 KT M, didn't show any afreraffects of his long layoff. since he was first Amateur , too . Keith McKey, who was first Amateur at the bomb , didn't show up in the pits . Shooting u p the back side of a very large mountai n, Novice Don Boese stretched out his lead while Ea rl and Conner diced through t he switch back na t ou t stuff. Ja mes Bell moved int o fifth fro m way back at 25 at the borrih, Begin ner J. Bus tarnent dropped out, leaving sixth to Ma rty O lson . T om Ho lms held sevent h afte r J eff Blant on dropped out. Va nce Hen der son and Art Grajeda rea lly got on th e gas. Hendersoo moved into eig ht h fro m 35 th wh ile G rajeda was so fa r back he wasn 't on the number sheet. Roese ler , after a slow pit . took off sounding really cruddy. Tom Brooks overshot the corner of pit row, swinging wide and way off course. Dwane Carter started to do the same. changed h is mind and dumped it. Last week he said he wished TTs had electric starters. He needed one now for sure. Harley man Ogilvie screamed through the pits with Wallingsford on his Up-Tire Husky next. John Tobin came through the pits running 17th overall . first 250 Amateur, second overall Amateur behind Sandy Robertson . four bikes ahead . Third Amateur through was Ron lrby. first Heavyweigh t. . Four bikes back came Number One Trai l Cha rlie H am ill laying on the tank wit h t he throttle at the stops. First "C" bike Expert Bill Eisele had to keep it wicked as Tom Grant wa nted to trade p laces rea l bad . Righ t be hin d Gra nt was James Vincen t wit h the same th ou gh ts Grant ha d . Pa t McEvoy had seco nd heavyweigh t as th e bikes po u red th ro ugh th e gas a nd out for another rou nd of " Bu ll." T he Novices pitted with abou t th e same positions, t hen t he Beginners started to filter in . Leading the new guys was Bob Gab le, with second Heavy Ed Wa lters and Pie Plate Paul Angelo third . First 250 went to Paul Ryan. finishing 12th
