Rodney Sullivan (Yam) took second from Podergois in the righthander on t he- fina l lap. Podergois claimed it back then lost it for good to Sullivan in the final turn . In other races . Rocky Pipkin pilot ed his Can -Am to the 200cc Novice honors over Alvin Justis and Michael Padilla (Yam). The top three positions in the 500cc Novice main went to Bruce Williams (Yam). MAR . 13 Sherman Schneller (Suz) riding for Santa Maria Cycle Sport . was t he pride a nd joy of Santa Maria when he took home top money in the 250 Pro class at this AME $1000 Duralube Series race. (H,' rides for his mot he r's motorcycle shop and had a lot of fans cheering him on .) . In the first mota he took the lead out of a field of '2 1 riders as Mike Wickersham (Mai) gave hi m a lot of press ure. Tim Lunde. also Maicomo unted for Co le Bros.. wasn't about to let Schneller control the class . ft ill/!) Lunde moved up into second as 3G Wickersham fell back. J ack Keese on a Bultaco out of Go leta Valley Cycle . p ulled ou t all the stops and moved into third . Meanwhile . Lunde went to work on Schneller and was right alongside him ; over the jumps. through the turns and challenging him everyway he could. Finall y getting by. Lunde took the lead and held it to the checkered flag . When the Pros came ba ck for a no t her 30 ·minute shot at the money. Lunde jumped into the lead. out to take another first. _ Lunde had Schneller right on him . pushing relentlessly . Bob Elliott (Suz ) who had a fourth the first time a rou nd was running in third with Tom Bass fighting him hard . Schneller finall y made it by Lunde going into the first turn after the tower. This race had its shan.. of casual lies . Bryar Holcomb. who had such a good ride last Sunday at Bakersfield . was running fifth in the first moto and finished in that position. t hen 'had to DNF in the second. Donnie Hansen was out and pushed his bike back to the pits . Bass got by Elliott for third . Schneller started to stretch out a nice lead . Bass. gaining on Lunde . made a wild move going into the firs t turn . taking seco nd . As t he race winds down. Bass is rig ht on Sch ne ller's tai l wit h no t more t han one bike's length between them. Elliott moved u p into th ird and Lunde who had ridden such a grea t race. was back in fourth. The checkered flag brought home Sch ne ller for a first overa ll. Lunde. second on .points and third went to Elliott for U.S . Suzuki. The 500 Pro race was a battle between Dave Czerwinski (Mai) , Rick Salmon (Mai). Tom Claire (teammate of Salmon). and Ra nd y Berkeley (Mai) . The first moro. Czerwinsk i and Salmon had a super tight race going for first. Then Berkeley moved in and took over. Czerwinski he ld onto second and Claire moved into third. Salmon was in fourth pushing C laire. These positions held throughout the rnoto , When the second moto came around . Salmon j umped into the lea d . with Czerwinski righ t behind him and Tom Webb (Mai) . another teammate. in third . Claire was in fifth and moving up. Berk eley was in fourth . fighting off Claire. Webb moved int o second and Claire. working on fourth . kept moving . right into third . Claire closed on Webb . doing a fantastic bit of coming from behind. to get second . Richee Collins started moving up through the pack . Webb tell back farther . finallv to DNF. On the whiteflag lap . Cze~winski moved back into fourth . ahead of Collins. Berkeley is in third . holding well and Claire in second makes one last attempt to get by Salmon . right down to the wire . Salmon he ld on and took second overall. Gary Moyer pulled a spectacula r t ric k by passing Rick Tomlinson in the last few fee l before the finish line but had to sett le for second overa ll behind Tom linson in the 125 Junior class . Cole Newkirk rode his Honda to DG 's Dave Taylor, a victim of trying too hard at the Rainier Dealer Cha llenge. vicrorv in the 125 Int erm ed ia te category: Mitch Wissner was second . Bill Leonheart , a brand new 125 Expert . led the race for eight laps until Greg Greener took over for about five laps . Then Mike Montgomery out of Modesto took over to win the first as well as the second moto for the overall win . Expert Mike Hersman won his first mota with ease on his 250 H usky . but Billy Johnson out of Hayward Yamaha got the jump on Hersm an in t he second moto . Hersman had to charge hard and fina lly passed for victory. Las t week's win ner J erom e Heiberger cou ld do no better than third p lace this week . Open Expert Bo bby Sull iva n fro m Pleasanton won on his Ma ico, after a bailie with Don Taylor from Modesto . Taylor crashed in the second mota. yet he pu lled it a ll back together to take second place. O ld Timer Bill Verbiscio, be tter known as "Biscuits." ry. of Cycle Tow n. San Rafael. took his class.
