Ovr CN customers are becoming increasing ly tired of reading several pages of Southern California events and arrivi ng at maybe two pages of North coverage, If this is because of a lack of enthusiasm on the part of loca l journalists. perhaps Northern California mo to rcycle dealers could be of some help. Perhaps the wives or girlfriends or local racers would be interested in writing some race coverage. instead of standing around wishing t heir boyfriend or husband would take up some other sport. ( It 's ti me for m e to say tha n ks to the kind folks who too k ca re of me a nd got m y_ gear off the desert at t he Brushbuster's Hare and Ho und. Tim Fagg of the Zebras got m e breathing half normal , laid me out. and treated me for shock. He stayed with me for over an ho ur and then led Rescue 3. Unit 41 in to me. Donna Nichol (a nurse) kept m e squared away on the back board. and did a good n umber on my atti tude. Her husband is one hell of a fine four· wheel driver. He missed as many bumps as possible. Thanks also to all of the unknown riders who carried the m essage to th e radio units , a nd a lso to the two turkey vu ltures (Carharles Aura) circli ng overhead to mark m y position. On t he fifth I left, wit h ca m pi ng gea r a nd m y CZ , from Santa Maria fo r a three a nd o ne half hour drive to the site. T he nex t morning , there was a Sheriffs ca r t here telling bikers to stay off the road . Fin e , cars have their rights too. About a n ho ur later though , he was ba ck say ing t hat t he sponsoring club (Greyhou nds) . had to produce written pe rmission to use the land . W e didn't have it so the officer patched through to try to find t he owner; he couldn't be fo und - we couldn 't race. W hat got m e especially ticked though , was the follo wing incident. I got my refu nd and th ought 'a bo ut taking m y b ike around the course . W rong again . the word got passed around t hat we have to leave quick or, the Sheriffs (by this time there was a ca r a nd a helicop ter) would get out thei r pads a nd start writin g! So I left. But, goi ng down th e road ; I saw another Sheriff headed out. I must assu me that his presence was "vital" because of the nature of us " terrible bik ers." I ha ve th e right to rid e and race th e question is - where' Please send m e in fo on o rganiz ations interested in protecting bik ers ' rights? DA VID NEWMAN Santa Maria, CA Your best shot with an existing organization is Moto rcycle Owners, Riders, Enthusiasts (M .O.R .E.), P. O. Box 26062, Sacra mento, CA 95826, Ph: (916) 36J ·9609. Since M . O.R.E. is a volunteer-action group, you'll very likely get out of it about what you put into it. It appea rs that the continually harassed riders of the eastern Antelope Valley need to tie into an existin M. O.R .E. Chapter, or f orm one 0 their own. It 's going to ta ke lots 0 plain old spadework to. preserve an riding rights in that area . . . Ed .
