MAR. 12 WheeIsmith's Maico ace Mark , R~dm a n chalked up yet another O pen Pr o win duri ng SSM's 40minute m otos. Rodman's win came after two straight wire-to-wire moto sweeps over Val Tarnietti (Mai) and Tony Pena (Yam) . Kelly Callaway took seco nd overall after both Tamietti and Pena scored one-mote DNFs, Meanwhile Jim Gibson did likewise to the 125 Pro division aboa rd a Bassett prepared Suzuki . Gibson left the pack a long distance behind . Mike Goodrich (Suz) ran runner-up to Gibson throughout the day to finish a strong second overall ahead of Jeff Tomlin (Hon) , During SSM's most competitive division . the 250 Pro's, Radical Ron Turner (FMF) pulled off t he ho leshot and worked into a commanding lead over Suzuki's Bob Elliott. Clark Jones (Mai). and Tom Cross (Mai) . only to have his throttle to Fall apart minutes from the finish . Elliott then went on to win the opening bout with great ease as Turner -coasted off into the pits. Crown Cycle's Jeff Vidic (Yam). and Steve Rhyan (KTM) made way past Clark Jones as the checkers fell . 30 Early in the second moto Jones and Rhyan slipped out into a great battle for t he lead. and on ly seconds behind (Yam). !:iving Hell-Anderson first 250 Expert , with Jordan -Roderick taking first 250 Novice . Jensen brothers Rick and Dave held a hotly contested position in the top five until the last lap . when the ma chine ry that had troub led them all day finally !:ave out. Henry Wesselman -Joe Polujancemcz (Yam) took fourth overall . second Open Expert, with Dan McEn'tireTony Stuart (Yam) bagging fifth overall, first 125 Intermediate. Expert Steve Blackwell teamed with beginner Steve Peck (Suz) to take sixth . and second 250 Expert. Ironman George Er l (125 Hus) took honors in the solo class. with Kent ' Perkins j ust slightly furt her back. First Open Ironrna n , Gary Gibbons . held quite a lead on his closest competition , Allan Aust in (Suz) throughou t the race . as did Tom Perry-Ken Matthews (Open Vet .. Hus) finishing 20 position ahead of the next Vet team . Barry Wallace -James Curtis (250 Hus). First time racer Ronnie Gunderson teamed with the more experienced Byron Vanderzanden (Suz -Yam) to take home the Mini brass. In all . racers and spectators a like agreed that the 20 .9 mi le course was super. • Resu lts in Results Section. the leaders Vidic and Elliott were doing the sa me over third. Rhyan made his move for the lead and quickly opened up a short lead. Only moments later however. R hya n's KTM shed ,its pipe. causing a radical power loss. dropping him to a distant fourth. Elliott made his way past Vidic after both tangled together sending Vidic to the ground while Elliott struggled to keep upright. During th e white nag lap Elliott closed on Jones but was unable to get within striking' range allowingJones to take the second moto win . Elliott. Tom Cross. An Race By Patty Kelsay CALIFORNIA C ITY . CA. MAR . 13 Mike Johnston (KTM) and Monte Lee (Yam) led the pack wire to wire as racers fought the March winds at Ca l City. By lap three. Johnston and Lee had an eight minute lead that they never lost throughout the event . taking both first overall. and top Open Expert honors . Behind them a super race took plan' for six la ps as several teams fought for the second spot. Ken Heil (Yam)· Wes Anderson (Suz) won out on the final lap over Ron Jordan-Rod Roder ick Non-pros go for it at Moreno Valley By Ron Lawson . excellent example of th is is a typical ' Moreno Va lley M.C. motocross a t De Anza Cycle Park. Scott Quick (A.G .E . Hon) demonstrated surprisi ng ability in the 125 Begin ner class . Not on ly did he win all three motos by a great m a rg in . but he did it on a bi ke that wasn 't even his. The machine belonged to Tony Porrini , a rare sort of !:uy who gives kids a chance to race when they don't own a bike of t heir own, Dennis Shaffer (Yam) came in second. The 250 Beginners ha d Dave Koch (Yam) and Victor Anselmi (Hon) d icing back and forth in all three motos . In the final race. Koch edged in ahead of Anselmi and took the overall win after a r e all y close bat tle . The 250 Int e rm ed ia tes had a simi lar race between Dave Oh l (Suz) and Roy Burton (Suz) . Early in the first moto , Burton had a strong lead. but about midway in the race . Ohl came up from behind and took the lead. The second moto was a ll Bu rton's . Ohl had some trouble but sti ll managed to finish second. Moto th ree was a repeat of the first one. Ohl took the lead on the fifth lap which gave him the overa ll victory . 125 Intermed ia te Joe McManus (Suz) aced his class with three straight firsts . Craig Gormley (Yam) and Micke y McDougal (Suz). however . did everything they could to stop him . McDouga l's bike was fresh off the showroom Iloor and this was his first chance to ride it. • Results in Results Section . Capodieci emerges atop AME pile-ups By Lee Taylor VALENCIA. CA. MAR . II The 125 Junior race seemed to be doomed from the start . In the first moto, Bill Sekeres (Suz) grabbed the holeshot a nd started to run away with th ings. One la p la ter . on the stretch at the top of the hill approaching the drop- off. practically the who le class piled up and the race had to be black nagged . No one was hu rt , and Sekeres' worst injury was losing a beautiful lead. On ' the resta rt . Sekeres was forced back in fourth . Dana Berg (Hon) too k the lea d and held it over George Capodieci and Tony Fazio (Hon) . The start of the seco nd moro was shy 10 bikes; t hat pile-up too k its to ll. Kevin Bollinger grabbed t he ho leshot , wit h Capodieci ru nning a strong second . Sekeres was third. All three of the fro nt runners were in rig ht: it was anyone's race. Another pi le-up at th e fa r end of the track caused the race to be black nagged. Berg . who had the lead earlier. was down and out of the race. On t he restart. Les Toffel took the lead with Sekeres push ing him in second. Capodieci and Sco tt Berg were running third and fourth . Toffel and Sckeres were locked in to a battle for first right down to the win' . Capodieci and Berg fought each ot he r for third to the end , The overall order ha d Capodieci home to a well-deserved first overa ll. second goi ng to Seke res , and third to Toffel. • Resu lts in Res u lts Section .
