FEB . 26 The Dirt Palace. officially th e Coliseum of the State 'Fa ir· grounds, is loca ted in the midst of a popu lat ed area . Outdoor mo tor vehicle raci ng was outlawed after 1972 . So th e series was run on st ric t contro ls. including the use of synt hetic oil . mufflers. and no riding outside the b ui ldi ng . Any riding ou tside . if no ticed by fairgro u nds offic ia ls, is grounds for losing the faci li ty . and indoor p laces not p ro hib iti ve in price are difficu lt 10 lind j n Uta h. T his series was ma naged t hriftily eno ugh by th e Iro n Pon ies MC that la rge crowds were no t essential for linancial su p po rt . Overa ll win ner for th e series was J im East . No. 3 in track th is yea r. who won a Hon d a Enduro . Another Honda was ra ffled off. The eager 125 Amateu rs m an aged three fa lse starts in thei r second hea t . leav ing o nly Brent Thurgood and Mo nt e Morris on th e front line . Brent . who is good anyway, ready to m ove u p . got the holesh o r. Monte tried to pass in sid e b ut Brent kept hi m b locked. They linished o ne and two in class . T he 125 Expert cla ss was combined with 250 Expe rts. then sp lit into an A and B group fo r the hea ts. In the A grou p Chris Billings. son of Vernal Yama ha shop owner Del yle . was wa y ou t fro nt followed by Kim Best . Dave W aym ent a nd Ph il Hart . Ronnie Yo ung on a TT 500 got an impressive start in the lirst heat of th e O pen Novi ce class. CUll ing across to t he pol e . Speed wa y rid er Danny Maxwell crashed his TT500 in the li rst heat of the O pen Expert class , was out for the rest of the meeting. Chris Billings shoved past Tim Go ldrick and '76 to p tracker Bob Best to win . In the seco n d heat Best moved up after a slow start , catching Chris in the last few yards for a thriller win by inc hes . In the m a in Best didn't q uite catch Billi ngs . J erry Hill (Hus) m oved up suddenly for third . T he 15 la p Sweepstakes fea tured Jim East , Bob Best . Chris Billings . Ro bert Bo rg . Jerry Hill and Adrian Nebe ker. Billings on his 400 Yamah a t h rea tened Best at first then kept getting fa rther behind Best 's TT500 in the straights. On the last turn Best fell over q uietl y because he was co ast ing a nd his weight was 100 far forward . He flopped back down o n th e g ro u nd in disgust after lirst sitting up . Mrs. Marty was busy delivering a new little Marty, so Hans. after h is lirst m ot o , ru sh ed off to chec k o n the sit uation at the hospi tal. He was back in tim e to ride his seco nd moto . Burro ws had so m e trouble keeping Ma rt y behind him du ring bo t h rnot os, with Ma rt y being in su ch a h urry 10 li nish an d lea ve! Experts and Int ermed ia tes took over th e track for the afte rnoon show, with the on ly three Ca lifo rn ia riders ou t there (all from the Sa cr a m e n to a rea) placing well in spite of th eir lungs runn ing lean a t t he un a ccu stomed a ltit u de . R ob ert Nort on ( Ho n ) of O rangevale . CA took home th e top 125 Exp e rt cas h . Nevad a's J oey Baera (Ho n) and Kim Ad amson (Yam) both ga ve Norton a hard ti m e ; bu t Baeta blew his cra nk p rio r to th e second m o to , afte r winning the li rst. Mike Co le sco red 3-3 for seco nd overall; Adamson had chain trouble in the first m oto , with the Int ermed ia tes a lso on the track for the co m bi ned 125 race. m ore action was goi ng on . Tim Sh erfy a nd Ro b bie Ha d lock, bo th on Suzu kis, held the lead positions, swa ppi ng off the li rst and second in both rnotos with eac h getting one win a nd Hadlock th e overall. A similar race went on for third between Ga yla nd Norton (Ho n) , the yo u nge r brother o f " tea m Norton ," and Kevin T r u a x (Suz) . No rton was th ere wh en it co unted both times for the t hird overall . Suzuki riders, Lowell Spiva from Ren o , Nevada . a nd Mark Hilton fr om Fa ir O aks.
