T he A meri cans were hold ing on to a four poin t defi cit co m ing into th e 14th race , At the sta rt Bast broke the tapes and was di squ al ified , though he feIt it was not he who broke th ern , This became a p pa re nt as he remained in th e starting block , W hen t he crowd rea lized what he was doing th ey let out th e loudest ro ar of the night , prompting Bast to toss off his helmet and sit sid eways on his bike with a look of permanance . When W orld Team ca ptai n Barry Briggs advised offic ia ls h e would not objec t to Bast rid ing, th e crow.i loved it. Bast won th e ra ce ha nd ily a nd th at was th e last tim e the crowd ha d anythi ng to yell about. In th e 16t h heat Bobby Schwartz was tumbled ou t by re fe ree J oh n Sn id er , but h e too was a llowed to race wh en Micha nek informed t he referee that it was bot h h e and Sc hwa rt z who broke th e tapes. T he Americans were abl e to re tu rn th e good sportsmanship wh en Zenon Piech fro m Pola nd was tossed ou t for the same reason . T h e final ra ce of rhe night e nd ed appropriatle y as Colli ns easily ou tdistanc e d Bast a nd Sha w to win by a secu re m argin . U.S . team manager Sonny Nutter filed a protest against th e Eu ropeans for using th eir reserv e rider Jim McMillan six times. Supposedly the F.I.M. rule allows only five rides for a reserv... At this writing no de cision had been made , but a decision is expected at Ventura , the fina l event of th e series.
