grounds, is loca ted in the midst
of a popu lat ed area . Outdoor
mo tor vehicle raci ng was outlawed
after 1972 . So th e series was run on
st ric t contro ls. including the use of
synt hetic oil . mufflers. and no riding
outside the b ui ldi ng . Any riding
ou tside . if no ticed by fairgro u nds
offic ia ls, is grounds for losing the
faci li ty . and indoor p laces not
p ro hib iti ve in price are difficu lt 10 lind

t hriftily eno ugh by th e Iro n Pon ies MC
that la rge crowds were no t essential for
linancial su p po rt . Overa ll win ner for
th e series was J im East . No. 3 in track
th is yea r. who won a Hon d a Enduro .

with 250 Expe rts. then sp lit into an A

Ronnie Yo ung on a TT 500 got an
impressive start in the lirst heat of th e
O pen Novi ce class. CUll ing across to
t he pol e . He was a lill ie too fast for
Su san An drew a nd Steven Vincent
to n igh t .

Speed wa y rid er Danny Maxwell
crashed his TT500 in the li rst heat of
the O pen Expert class , was out for the
rest of the meeting. Chris Billings
shoved past Tim Go ldrick and '76 to p
tracker Bob Best to win . In the seco n d
heat Best moved up after a slow start ,
catching Chris in the last few yards for
a thriller win by inc hes . In the m a in
Best didn't q uite catch Billi ngs . J erry
Hill (Hus) m oved up suddenly for
third .
T he 15 la p Sweepstakes fea tured
Jim East , Bob Best . Chris Billings .

Nebe ker. Billings on his 400 Yamah a
t h rea tened Best at first then kept
getting fa rther behind Best 's TT500 in
the straights. On the last turn Best fell
over q uietl y because he was co ast ing
a nd his weight was 100 far forward . He
flopped back down o n th e g ro u nd in
disgust after lirst sitting up . Best ca n
a lwa ys be depended on for a sho w of
o ne sort or a not her.

(Ho n) and Kim Ad amson (Yam) both
ga ve Norton a hard ti m e ; bu t Baeta
blew his cra nk p rio r to th e second
m o to , afte r winning the li rst. Mike
Co le sco red 3-3 for seco nd overall;
Adamson had chain trouble in the first
m oto ,
with the Int ermed ia tes a lso on the
track for the co m bi ned 125 race. m ore
action was goi ng on . Tim Sh erfy a nd
Ro b bie Ha d lock, bo th on Suzu kis,
held the lead positions, swa ppi ng off
the li rst and second in both rnotos with
eac h getting one win a nd Hadlock th e
overall. A similar race went on for
third between Ga yla nd Norton (Ho n) ,
the yo u nge r brother o f " tea m
Norton ," and Kevin T r u a x (Suz) .

both times for the t hird overall .
