Hagen has never won more than S30 in his life as a Pro. He's alw ays been on e of th e faithful racing regularl y but never reall y in the mon ey. Steele. who ca me b ack from a sixth in his first mota to a solid third in th e second , picked up second ove ra ll. And Holcomb , who entered his 'first mota two laps lat e a nd rod e hard throughout, took third . Fourth went to Czerw inski for a 3 - 6 rid e. Co llins, who pushed his bik e ac ross, picked up fifth . If either Salmon or Berkele y had pu shed a cross th e line th ey wou ld of been in th e money. • Results ran last week . E Tripes wins South Bay HSMX on new course By James Brammer SAN DIEGO , CA . MA R. 2 High School Mot ocross opened on a new course at Sou th Bay Pa rk Sp eedway with changes intended to bring the course close \ Vince Kreizinger t ook on e spill in t he second moto and fi ni shed third at South Bay 's HSMX 500 Pro class . position; on th e white flag lap he moved into fifth posit ion and held it down to th e wire . Cole maintained his lead , ending up th ird overall , Lunde took second and Jones brought hom e first overall. The 500 Pros had to be th e stra ngest race of the day. When they took off in the first mota. Brya r Holcomb was back in the pits working on his KTM . A friend rushed over to tell him his race had just taken off. H e got ready and joined them , two laps do wn. Rick Salmon (Mai) , was in the lead a nd held it throughout th e mota. Rich ee Collins (KTM ), was running second , keeping the heat on Salmon. David Czerwinski (M ai ) and Bill H agen (Suz ) were dueling awa y for third . Holcomb did th e best he could, but had to settle for sevent h .Randy Berk eley's bike broke down and he neglect ed to push it across the line , settling for a DNF. When the second mota came a round , Salmon again grabbed th e lead and it look ed like he had first ove ra ll in his wallet. This tim e, Holcomb was ready and right on top of it , running third and putting pressure on Berkeley running in second. Daniel Steel e (KT M) was in third keeping th e heat on Holcomb . Then .Sa lm on pulled off th e tr ack in trouble. He did everyt hi ng he cou ld to ge t running aga in but with no lu ck . He a lso negl ected to pu sh his bik e ac ross the line. Holcomb was in second , keeping th e pressure on Berkeley. M ike Tidwell 1 did what he usually does at Elsinore - he won. t hi s t im e 21 a Special Expert race. . under the quartz lights and focus action in front of the center st ands . The lighting of the course is improved. Mike Tripes, who won , said it is the best night course for motocross. Tripes's points from his 250 Pro class win will go to Santee in the high school series. Double moto win ner in the thi rd division of 125 juniors, James Gochmanosky (Han) , leads a three man team fr om Mo rse High with the start of Richard Bra nd in the 250 Junior class . Mark Castella nos, a 125 Junior is the only other rider from Morse. Gochmanosky got the holeshot at the start in his first win . In th e second , he started in third, one rider fell , and Gochmanosky passed the other to take the lead . Tim Hendersen fro m Granite Hills High was on a CCM BSA, a large 4stroke m ach ine , in the 500 Junior class . He finished th ird in his first mota, but the deep sand tripped his monster machine in the final mota. A racer's racer, Rob N orgaard (Kaw) led the talented Pros to win in -the 500 class . George Speer took top honors in the 125 Pro class. • Results in Results Section. Walton, Neihard and Tidwell Special winners at Elsinore TT By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CA, FEB. 26 It looke d as if there were two different races going on in th e Elsinore TT's special Novice race. T ommy W alton, Ron 26 ",-- -- ---....;; ' Hl auka, and Bruce Wi ndham were hashing it out way in front , then about four bike lengths back , the rest of the Novices followed . Hlauka (25 0 Kaw ) led the first moto for two short laps, but Walton also preferred th e number one spot , and he worked his way into the lead. As the race came to a close, Walton wheeled his 250 Yamaha across the fin ish line in first place. Hlauka was second and 360 Yamahamounted W indham fini shed third . In the second go 'round , Walton pulled the holeshot and was long gone . Hlauka again had to play second fiddle , while Robert Young took third this time , on a 250 Honda . H1auka had the race th e final rnoto . T here wasn't any "racing" goi ng on , just one big follow-the -leader race. Walton took home the trophy and Hlauka and Young were second and third overall. Another spec ial ra ce incl ud ed eight amateurs . Mike DeBruyn who led the way . during the first mo to and took the checkered. DeBruyn had a huge lead over Dylan Neihart . Chris Choisser was aboard a brand new 400 Yamaha and rode it to a fourth behind Fred Parker. For mota two , everyone was moving out . Joel W indham in first and Neihart in second was the line up far in fro nt of the other amateurs . Ne ihart was in the number three spot for a very short time but soon got by Steve Karstan , who 's 125 just didn't have enough horses to keep Neiha rt off his back . The final order was: Windha m, Nei hart and DeB ru yn . Cho isser turned that big Yamaha on and took the final mota. Ne ihart was close an d really gave h im a run for his money but Choisser pulled off the win. Neih a rt followed in for second but chalked up enough poin ts to tak e the overall win . DeBruyn was second · overa ll a nd Choisser took third . Bob Sa nders and Mike T idwell stirred it u p in the special Expert class . . T he first time out Sanders read th e starter perfectly and took the lead from the start. Tidwell is used to th at number one spot and he soon had it all to hi mself. Sanders had the hea t a pplied to him , and the wh ite flag lap started things rolling. Don Frauenberger inched u p on Sa nd ers as they flew over the jump side- by-side , a nd when Sanders went wide orr the sweeper , Frauenberger had the room he needed to pass. The checkered fell with Tidwell leading. Frauenberger seco nd and Sa nders third.Tidwell do m inated the second race and left Sanders and Frauenberger in his dust. The places changed almost every lap but Tidwell again recieved the first . Frauenberger worked his way from fifth to seco nd and Sanders again took
