JIM LEONARD Pleasant Hill , CA Most motorcyclists do not wear yellow, orange, white, or pink at or above shoulder height when riding in daylight . It has been proven (NHTSA Motorcycle Saf ety Conference; ' San Francisco, July, 1973) th at headlights increase conspicuity, and conspicuity decreases accidents. The hot tip is to be a helm et ed rid er with off-road and road racing experience; on a fast ma ch in e unemcumb er ed by windshield, saddlebags, sissy bar, crash bars, etc.; with the headlight on . . . Ed . Honest man seeks Howard Hooper I'm looking for th e address of my su pe r tuner , Howard Hooper, formerl y of Sport-time Yamaha of Tarzana , CA, and last contacted In the Chicago area. I still owe him $36 from last year, and I would like to pay h im. DONVOLK R t. Please note : The forks a re Simons (tu bes, slide rs, tripk cl amps , Tstem, intern a ls. ax le , a nd brake sta y). JOHN WELCH Los Altos, CA Your two -parter on the H urt report was excellent - by far you r best effort in th e area of information fo r the average motorcyclist. Dr. Hurt and his team and your Lane Campbell are to be congratu lated . W it h m o re of th is type of objective investigation maybe both motorcyclists and non -motorcyclists can be made aware of those factors which have made st r ee t riding th e high risk endeavor that it is, Let 's hope t e . results aren't ignored by either th e " he lm e ts are a hazard " or tHe " moto rcycl ists art> all crazy" factions . Please keep us posted on the final report and the Federal Government's re act ion to it. I'd like to feel safe riding o n the street. R ICHARD E_JARBOE Arvada , CO TV shows and police harassment As a motorcycle fanatic, I spend my spare time working on my SCoot or even . better, riding it , rather than watching the idiot box (TV), Once in a while how ever , (probabl y by mistake) , they do show so m e motorcycle-related programs which I usually miss and only hear about the following day , from some TV freak at work , It would be nice if you co uld spare an inc h somew he re in your fine pa per to print a sc hedu le of any suc h programs th at might be comi ng up , be it a movie like O n A ny Sunday o r a film of th e Hang Ten G !'. I a m sure that (u nfo rt una tely) it will no t take much space but it would cert a inly be appreciated by a lot of TV -ha ters like me , Who knows, it might even be an incentive for the networks not to forget o ur too silen t minority. I enjoy your bike packing articles ver y much and the pol itical/land managemenr / R, V. parks line. It seems to me that we are too silent in our effort to achi eve recognition . Just yesterday I happened to be out in the desert near Palmdale. a place ca lled Three Sisters, where for years ca m pe rs, bikers, dune buggers, etc. themselves. Suddenly e nj oy e d yesterday th e police ca ug ht up with us corning from all directions (a car. a jee p and a Chopper) a nd told us and th e rest of th e families that were camped there to leave and never return, that we wer e trespassing o n private (u nposted) property in L. A. Cou nty . They told us to mo ve a few mi les into another county and that we wou ld n't be distu rbed th ere - th is was of co urse L.A, Co unty po lice so a ll th ey wanted to do was pass t he buck. W hy do n't we do like th e Civil R ights demonstrators and jam up the civic ce nte r with a few thousand trucks, jeeps, campers, trailers and bikes ? Then maybe they'll decide to do som ething about us. MAUR ICE E, MAURIZI Granada Hills, CA
