Amateur and Expert rid ers to th e bomb followed closely by Bal entine . Cordis Bro oks (250 Bu l). Phil Stum bo (400 KT M) a n d Tom Kelly (250 KTM). Malocco held his lead over qu ite a distance. Stumbo and Kelly had a ba d e goi ng a fter the bo m b . Stum bo's bike contracted a fron t flat. which slowed him down en ough for Kelly to get by and take fourth . Malocco's great ride did not last. Somewhere before R andsbu rg Roa d . he encountered a road crossing which threw him down and put him out of 'the ra ce . This same road crossing was where Kelly slipped past Brooks. Balentine and Kell y were within 15 seconds of each other at the first gas pit. Brooks was by next with a fair sp ace between himself and Stumbo. The back section of the course ju st after the gas stop was extremely fast and Bal en t in e widened t he space himself and Kelly considerably. At the wire it was clearly Balent ine with about three mi nutes over Kelly . Two minut es lat er it was Brooks. wh o in turn had several minutes on Stumbo. who deserves a spec ia l award for not giving up. The p revious day someone co llided with him and he spent a great deal of time repai ri ng his bik e . Mike johnston (400 KT M) bo unced in next , tu rning in a good ride for t he d ay, ending up fifth overall. First Amat eur was Lee Scheffers (400 KTM) but not without a fight from Gary Dav ies (400 Yam) who was just slightly ahead at t he gas pit with Scheffers working his way up just before the finish . Next in was Heath Hi bbard (400 Yam) who was being pursued by Monte Lee (250 Yam). Tim Plant ( 175 DMG) completed the top ten after hard rid ing through th e dust to compensate for a bad start. The Lig htweight Ama teu r bottle was about as ho t a nd fired u p as it could get wit h Darren Pritchett ( 175 Yam ) barel y beat ing Bernard Unhassobicay (I25 Hon ) and Allen Decker (175 Yam) . All three crossed the finis h within feet of each.other. Dave Wood (400 Yam) b rought the junior/Senior Open Experts to the wire with Gu s Pau ll (400 Yam) right behind to capture the Senior class honors . Rich ard H a le (250 Pen ) finished j ust ahead of jay Sheldon (250 Yam ). who cele brated his 50th birthday in style b} taking second 250 Seni or Ama teur."?" Scott Duncan (250 SUl) rode a fantastic race by not only beating Steve Zoller (250 Yam) and Mark Moullet (250 KTM) for the class win . but also for first overall No vice . Frank Ar ciero (400 Yam) crossed the fin ish line just a head of Rex Bon ham (400 KT M) and Lloyd He inze (400 Yam) for th e Open Novice win . C . Crabbe (500 Yam) dominated the Senior Novi ces whil e just behind came junior/Senior lightweights Glen Co x ( 125 Yam), Don Earll ( 175 Yam ) and Gil Catton ( 175 C·A ). Le slie Klug (250 Hon ) showed everyone how she earned her Number One Plate b y ea sil y win n ing th e Amateur Powd er Pu ff class with W inona Richardson (250 KTM) doing likewise in th e Novic e Powder Pu ff ranks. Da nny Araujo (400 Yam) fough t off the charges of J u nior/ Sen ior rider. Mike Robertson (500 Yam) and Terry Strickland (250 Yam) for the overall Begi nner win , while Ha rol d Smith rode his 100 Yamaha to a n impressive victory over Mike Br u no ( 175 KTM) and Mike Huggins (125 Hon) . Ray Pfeiffer outlasted the rest of the Sen ior Begin ners and so did Lloyd W ells (125 Hon) ; both were class win ners. The Mini class riders all des erve an ext ra big hu ge , humongus ro u nd of applause for completing the 80 mil e course. First to the finish was Donn ie Morrison (80 Yam), wit h Alan Dryden (80 SUl) in for second a nd Kelly Kline (80 Yam) finis hing third. The course was extremely dusty due to la ck of rain, But even with this hazard . the bikes in some areas of the course were able to run at top speed .
