FEB . 28 Contrary to information taggedonto a news story regarding the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) last week. Joe Parkhurst has not been named the head of racing for the AMA . According to AMA President Bob Rudolph. "T he facts are these: There was a Board of Trustees meeting held immediately after the Annual Meeting on Feb. 17 , 1977 . At that Board meeting I read a letter from Dan Hunt. Publisher of Cycle Wo rld , informing us that Joe Parkhurst 's relationship with CBS , Cycle World would cease on March I . 1977 and therefore he would no longer be their representative. Rather than appoint someone else from their. magazine to fill Joe's remaining year on the Board, Dan very generously suggested the Board use its best judgement in filling this upcoming vacancy. It was at this . time, on February 17th, not 21. I nominated and the Board approved Roger Hull to serve. "There are probably many positions with the AMA which Joe Parkhurst could fill very well, including that of Commissioner. However, he has not applied for the job , is not under consideration for it and in fact has spent considerably time along with others of us in interviewing the candidates who are applicants. " We apologize for the inaccuracies. Oops: In our Renegade GP coverage, bike number 41 was not the Tassano Maico. The rider was the Dennis Bennett half of the BennettlErrio team. Don Emde is handling the negotiations for his brother David's first trip out of the cou nt ry - to Imola , (Italy) Paul Ricard (Fra nce), and the Match Race Series (Engla nd ). All expenses to the races will be pa id by th e promoters. so now it's just a matter of how much start money. David says he wants to ' wait until after Daytona to sign the final contracts, because 'T m going all out to win , and I'm ready." Emde will tum 19 years old on Ma y 6. Yamaha Motor Corp. will supply Sue Fish, the International Women's Motorcycle Association lIWMA! National Champion, with a YZ125 and parts for 1977, according to Yamaha spokesman Steve Foitle. Mechanical assistance will come from Crown Cycle o~ Rosemead, Calif_ Foitle says that Yamaha will 'assist Fish with expense money for certain events, like the Women's Invitational World GP in San Antono, Texas May 27·28. Carrying through on a promise to restructure professional racing, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Board of The syndicated television series "T he Racers" will focus on two of America's top professional motocross racers during the current programming season . Hosted by two -time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford, "The Racers" visited two events of the 1976 Trans-AMA International Motocross Series. The result is two programs, one of which will feature Pierre Karsmakers and the other Marty Smith. Keep an eye on your local listings for channel and time of "T he Racers" in your area. Trustees, at their Feb. 16-18 meeting in Westerville, Ohio. has created three professional racing boards to deal with din track . motocross and road racing. Chairman of all three boards -will be the Commissioner of Professional Racing. , The four remaining members on each five-member board will represent diverse constituencies within the world of professional motorcycle racing. One rider and one promoter from each arena of racing will represent their groups on each board. A third member will be appointed on the basis of technical expertise, and the founh on the basis of business management experience. (Continued on page 41) Spies report that Can·Am was testing a larger than 250cc, smaller than 500cc piston-port two stroke off road weapon last weekend. Our sources tell us that several other brands of motorcycle were obtained by Can-Am for comparison purposes. The bike, said to be capable to running anywhere in fourth gear, is allegedly faster than any stock Open-class machine now sold in the United States _ One big question remains - how will it handle? One source claims it's just as good as the competition. As soon as a test unit comes our way, we'll find out. AMA creates pro racing boards, seeks members 2 Last month a faculty group from University of California, Berkeley wrote a letter to President Carter damning all ORVs and urging more restrictions. Bill Ballard will furnish the bikes and equipment (Jawa!, with Malcolm Smith Racing Products and Pennzoil providing sponsorship, oil. gas, etc. Our own Jack Mangus just returned from the French Riviera (poor guy) where he attended a press conference which formally announced the upcoming AGV World Cup, a three race series with rounds at Daytona (March 13,) Imola (Italy) April 3 , and Paul Ricard (Fra nce) Ap ril 17. AGV Helmets has posted $30,000 for the series which will be paid out via the following breakdown: $9,000 per event paid to the top five point leaders per the following schedule - 1. $3.500; 2. 2.500; 3. 1.500; 4.1.000; 5. 500. That's a total of $27,000 and the additional $3,000 will go to the overall winner. A rider who led the standings after all three rounds could pick up $13.soo in AGV money. Nottoo shabby. Rotary Cycles of U.S .A ., Inc. has announced that they are no longer the importers of Hercules motorcycles and mopeds. Legendary four-stroke tuner Pops Yoshimura remains hospitalized at Riverside 'Hospital in North Hollywood, Calif. with seconddegree bums suffered in a dynoroom fire at Yoshimura R&D of America on Feb. 18. According to Fujio Yoshimura, Pops' son, Pops will miss ' Daytona because his burned skin is too sensitive to be exposed to the sun. Doctors predict that Pops will be released at the end of his second week in the hospital. Three major motorcycling organizations (the AMA , M.O .R.E. , and Desert Racing Assoc.) have reached a consensus on a recommended State Off Highway Vehicle Park site in Southern California . Letters are expected to go out to AMA members shortly, urging support for Hungry Valley as the preferred site. The organizations will recommend that California acquire Hungry Valley's 19,000 acres immediately, and study a long-term leasing arrangement to open the 'Potrero site next. A total of 293 AMA amateur road racers have filed entries for amateur competition at DaYtona International Speedway on Wednesday, March 9. Entries for the traditional "amateur day" at DaYtone have closed with 57 entrants in showroom stock classes, 87 in modified production' classes and 99 in grand prix classes. In all, 13 classes of competition win be held. Registration will be open for riders on Tuesday, March 8 only. Sound tests and technical inspections will be conducted Tuesday and on Wednesday morning. Practice on Wednesday will begin at 8 a.rn, with the first 10-lap final event on Daytona's infield course scheduled at noon. HosPital Stop: Larry Geese, design engineer for ANCRA ltiedowns and stuff! suffered severe multiple fractures of his left arm several weeks ago when he crashed head, on with another rider on a trail near Gorman, Calif. Larry was recently released .fr om the hospital and is expected to return to work soon. (Continued on page 28)
