It 's one of many sma ll , lowslung buildings that dot the roadside there. It 's also the retail outlet fo r all sorts of really fin e outdoor gear, made right in this tiny communit y, which is as close to the great wide backwoods as you can get. All around are the snowcovered, jagged teeth of the Cascades. In the background is a giant green loaf of a mountain with the tiny whi te slash of a waterfall gleaming at its m iddle. What more id eal setting to perfect one's back country gear? T he two -tone yellow and brown n ylon daypack happened to be on sale for $5 .9 5 when we picked it up , wit h the thought of doing some hea vy b ikepacking d u ri ng the co ming season . Still new to t he bikepacking/back packing sce ne, we don't have m uch to com pa re it with, but in many weeks of both fast (desert) and slow (tri als) riding, it has worked out beautifully for us in its intended purpose . It is just compact enough tha t there's still room under it o n your back for a Vivitar camera case. Thus loaded, you've got capacity for camera and lenses plus all the n icet ies to support a day in the toolies - trail food , toilet paper, spark plugs, tools, chain oil , extra bandana and goggles, matches, aspirin, bandages, tow rope, master links and even dry socks - with room left over . Being a soft pack, it just hangs in a formless lump from its two wide shoulder straps, loosely secured around your middle with a third strap. As such, it's totally out.of 32 ,the way fo r riding, doesn't snag anything, doesn't overbalance yo u , doesn't flop about, and only begins to weigh on your shoulders after several hours , in the saddle (by which time other parts of you are equally sore) . All straps can be slackened or tightened with an easy one·handed pull. It's waterproof and soil·resistant. It has two compartments with zipper· closure and a security strap is added to the larger one. .; , , . Wi ll . Power road racing and riding boots In st ru ct ion s a r r- in cl uded for ha ving By John Huetter he same company that makes thet'Coach Wood· en " basketball shoes has also entered the motorcycle boot business with three models: motocross, enduro and road racing - the latter of which also work extremely well fo r T touring and street riding as it turns out. T he asp halt-oriented boot is of very tough , th ick leather with a double thickness red, wh ite and flue flash ing down th e shin area to pped by the " Power" logo. The ankle area is padded; there is a hard to e and a rigid , ribbed shifter patch on th e instep of both the left and right boots . They zip up the back and thezipper is then covered by two leather snap flaps. The top closu re is one-time adjustable , to you r leg-leather size ; then all yo u h~ve to do is snap it without fumbling ' with the bu ckl e. The top of the boot is ~Iasticized to fit snugly around either Jeans or full coverage road rasher leathers. ' The boot is of heavier construction and better quality than either of the other tW? ro~d racing/ riding boots common In this country (Sid i and Top Gear are the ones we know about .) and (Here comes the nice part. ) are incredibly comfortable. They conform to the foot very nicely and seem to offer more protection than others without noticeable compromise in feel. They are also rain-proof and it was very nice to have dry feet after an afternoon's riding in a rainstorm our first time out.
