Lanc e Mo orewood , riding a D&G Suzuki , had an off-o n da y as he grabbed the 250 Pros , but was shut o ut of th e 125s instead. The man who pulled that off was G regg T oyama o n a n FMF Su zuki , wh o did th e trick in t hree mo tos strai gh t. Gillman , who was appeari ng on a sho p-s ponso red, p re -p rod uc t io n YZ 400 , go t th e le ad a s the p a ck thunder ed off the lin e, Right behind Gillm an was Ji m Harris (Yam) a ll hot a nd hea vy, bu t getting cooler as Gillman st retched out the lea d and went o n his way to the checkered flag, On th e seco nd start , Jeff Vidic (Ya m) got a super ho leshot on everybody as he too k the outside line and gassed it while evervbody else hit the first turn , brakes on ' and gas err. By the time a ny body knew wh at was goi ng on , Vidi c was lon g go ne a nd cruised his wa v to th e m ot o win , With his overall vict o ry in th e ba la nce , G illm an came back in the closing ro u nd to grab a super lea d with o nly Vidic , back in secon d , as an y possibl e threat. The moto ended with Gillman in pocession of a 15·20 seco n d lead over Vid ic , a nd the overall win as well. Vidi e , wh o DNF'd moto o ne wit h a seized engine, put his subsequent finishes together to tak e second . Jim H arris was thi rd . Lance Moorew ood was ' his typical sel f, as he o nce aga in demol ished the 250 Pro cl ass in three rno tos, In a lmost eve rv start , Lan ce was in th e lead ; and if he' wasn 't , it took little t ime for him to ge t th er e -, Gregg Toyama put Moorewood . i ~ h is p lace by sh owi ng t he forme r M IllI champ how to really ride a 1251 Toyama was consistent in the holeshot department whil e Moorewood had a hard time ge tt ing a decent sta rt. The FMF rider berserked it in all three mot os wh ile Moorewood was either stuc k in traffic or on th e ground checking out so i l conditions . Moorewood ended up second in all three rounds, finishing seco nd . Willy Simons ( Ya m) , wh o collided and crashed with Moorewood in the second mot o , bounced ba ck in moto three to co llect third p lace. For his efforts in winning th e 125 Pros, Gregg T oyama co llected not o nly the usual load of cas h th at is custo m a ry in m oney-cross, but also a d og from D&G as well. • Results in Results Section. Gonzales takes two at Desert Whee/sMX By Greg Robertson EDWA RDS, CA . , FEB , 20 Over two hundred racers and a few hundred specta to rs watched Eddie Gonzales swee p the Open Experts with a perfect score, and then go o n to win the hea vyweight divis ion of th e team race . on a ro ug h track at Ed wards A. F. B. In the O pen Expe rt class, Eddie's - co m peti tio n wasn' t really that bi g of a t hreat as he easily got the hol eshot in both motes an d went on to win them with m ore than enoug h room to spare , Lanc ast er Yamaha 's own George Fa ber rod e co nsista n tly enough to take secon d ov er all away from Mark Mangold who rode a Yamaha 400 end u ro in for third . Aircone rider Rick Guilmette (Suz) showed the rest of the 125 . Junior Division 11 riders just how fast his bike is by getting the holeshot. It ' on ly lasted a few la ps before Dennis Creason (Suz) closed Guilmette's lead down and finally got by for the first motowin. T hi ngs wer e differ ent in th e second m oto th ou gh. Guilmette once again power ed his RM out of the first co rn er in th e lead and pr oc eed ed to ope n up so me room ' be twee n himsel f · a nd Don Grigsby made his m other ne rvous , but he kept his co o l and t opped the 500 Experts at Elsinore 's D-37 Scra mbles . seco n d - p la c e Creason . Midwa y through the moto, Creason fell down and Morgan Gough (Yam) took over seco nd place with Duane Greer (Yam) in thi rd. Guilmette held his lead to the end . which ga ve him first overa ll. Morgan Gough took second and Dean Mo rse brou ght his Suzuki in for third . Results in Results Section. Tidwell, Grigsby win Lightweight scrambles By Maureen Lee ELSINORE, CA . , FEB . 20 Using the original Elsinore TT circuit th e Lightweights M.e. threw a really neat scrambles Sunday. The ladies of that club really kn ow how to handle the paper work even if Shirley Grigsb y (o the rwise kn own as T vBone's mother ) thinks it 's nervous breakdown time! The warm su n gave the ri ders a pure groove to ri de in and it was sta y in it or else, so whoe ver got out of the hole first was gene ra lly first at the flag if he kept his wits about him a nd rode defensively. Dannv Perkins and Mik e Tidwell ended up talking to each other after th e first two 250 Expert motos just to make sure neither thought 'the other one was bumping him on purpose, or doing so me t h i ng they shouldn 't oughter! Tidwell got su ch a sh unt in the second round his chain eame off. First moto, Perkins grabbed the lead with Tidwell righ t after. Mike passed Danny , Danny passed him ba ck then Tidwell , held it down on the pole all around the tight back section and emerged with the lead at th e end , Next round he was in th e infield most of the ra ce getting his chain ba ck on , whil e R ickie Volk led Larry Bird , Perkins and J eff Springman home . La st. rou nd it was T id well a ll t he Wlay with Perkins literally breathing into his exhaust pipe. Steve Tinsley, who was married just th e day before and, was spending his honeymoon at the track with his new bride, couldn't get his Bultaco to shift right for th e 500 Expert class , but Don Grigsby had it all together with three straight. Doug Da venport got some good starts but couldn 't keep it together wh ile Rex Hailey, after a dismal eighth in the first moto got with it with two straight second places to win second over -a ll . Don Frauenberger came in third with a second and two thirds. Once again the Open class turnout was down so they ran them all together. Pat Dobbins was going great with a second in the first heat and going on strong until his Triumph let go . Dylan Neihart won the class with two firsts and a third while Steve Miller was always right th ere looking for a door to open . Last rnoto Neihart was trying so ha rd to catch Dave Peters , who was leading , he left the door op en and Miller sho t for second spot in nothing flat. The Sidehacks are co m ing out regularly now (h u rra h) . T he re were . se ven of them Sunday with the Stevens/Sanner Honda taking three stra ight . That old TT adage of "Pitching it sideways through the comers " applies to sidehacks as well; 'if you' ve ne ver watched Jimmy pitch that bellowing Honda of his through tum one, watch him . The Mas ella hack with Loreto and Claudio aboard looks wild when the front end starts washing and Loreto is hanging onto roadracing clipons with no leverage! The 125 Amateurs were really . banging each other around and la ying on each other in their siarts, with Steve Griffith winning it and Jay Bales second; and 125 Novice main winner Sam Burns also won his heat. Again there was a good 500 Novice turnout and Kelly Templeton smoked 'em in th e heat and the main . 500 Amateur Mike Montgomery laid his Yamaha over just a leetle too fa r in the first 19
