Fred Griego and Ed die Gonzales were the Expert class winners at the AM A D-37 rnoto cross hosted by the Riders M.C. The Riders M.C . (another name for the Elsinore Raceway management that puts on weekly Saturday night TT races) were disappointed by the sm a ll turnout of less than 100 riders. Rodney Brand won the 125 Expert class via a two moto sweep , In th e first m o t o, Bra nd was led by Desert Suzuki of Barstow tea m m a te , Mark Barnes. Brand passed Barn es on a downhill section of the track a nd led from there , pulling away stea d ily. Between motos , But ch D arling (H on) was co m pla in ing a bo ut la ck of horsepower. But Darling , the curre nt Number One pla te hold er in th e cl ass (who had finished thi rd in the first m oto), pulled holesh ot in th e second rou nd. He led fo r th ree la ps, with Brand on his ta il m ost of the tim e . and righ t bes ide h im everywhere else . Brand won easily for the seco nd tim e . Darling rode a co u ple of laps at a su bd ued pace , then rode ha rd to bring himself up to th ird in th e final tally . behind Barnes. The 250 Expert class look ed like it was going to another two Desert Suzuki riders. Tim Welker and Fred Griego. Welker took an immediate lead and started pulling away from everybody rapidly. Not quite halfway through the moto , however. Welker's shift lever sp un on its splines, leaving him stuc k in fifth gear, Griego took over the lead and held it to the finish. W elker took about five la ps to repair the shifter. then returned to th e track and almost gained one lap on Griego. The" second moto was qu it e different. Welker took the holeshot and st arted running away from th e pack. Before th e 20 minutes or so was up. he had lapped th e entire field .
