The rid er has to Ill' sta nd ing on the sea t of his mot orcycle by .t he ROSEBURG . OR , FEB . 13 The dust was so thick. that when 22 juniors in the 125 class left the start. 20 of those were lost past t he first hillside turn. One rider and bik e parted company in that first tum and the rider had to wait for the -d ust to settle before he could find his bike! Bert Arena (Yam) took three solid _ firsts for the . day's 'top 125 Junior trophy. It.took him three laps on the half mile hillside track to work out of the first moto pack. He didn't fool around in motqs two and three - he was first into the first turn both times. Suzuki-mounted David · Dense totaled 3-3·2 for second. ' Records were set by the 250 Expert class . Chris Washburn (Suz) 't urned th e fastest lap of the day at 1:25 . Another " first" was a four-way tie at 900 points each between Suzuki riders , Frank Word , Chris W ashburn , Rick Yates and Lonnie Bentley. The first moto saw a wicked tangle over the first jump that downed Washburn , Glen L il ya and Mark Mattheisen , Mattheisen and bike were ' both inj ured and had"to scratch. Lilya figured heavily in that fir st rnoto , going Irom the "wipe -out to a fourth only to have his bike seize in rnoto two . After the third moto dust settled , riders -with 900 po ints were awarded trop hies by virt ue of that third moto rule- as follows : 4 -4-1 , Rick Yates; 6·1 2, Washburn ; 3-2 ·4 , Bentley and 1-35, Word . 125 Experts voted for money instead of trophies and Randy Wing (Yam ) took th e top of the pot . on a borrowed bike . The 100 class was a ba ttle between two Suzuki riders , Vic Lilya and Joe Diltz . Lilya got crossed up in a soft berm 'during the final m oto , gh'ing Diltz th e lead for th e last half of th e white flag lap. Both riders shot. for the checkered flag and Lil ya a ced out Diltz by a slim half-b ike length. Tony "J en kins, his second tim e at motocross this season , finished third. The turnout of Min i rid ers (13 years and under) is usually low at Clark's Branch sim ply because. it's a tough track and th e little gu ys must run four laps over t he whole cou rse . Brian ' Mode ( Ya m) made it look easy , copp ing three first s with room to spare . Second place was Stan Roberts (Suz) and clo se on his back fender was Co os Bays Denny Ever et t. • Results in Results Sect ion. Williams wows Oregon Old Timers By .J an Ne~ma n SANDY , OR , FEB . 6 Mt. View Cycle Park hosted the Old Timers today and Bob Williams rode his first race as an official member. They may wish they'd black-balled him , as they rated him an Expert at th e outset , but l)e still blew th eir doors off. Bob has long been a familia r- face. but always as a wrench for his son , Kirk. Suddenly, Kirk was grown and on his own , dri fting av:ay from th e weekly ra ce sce ne . Bob had to find some excuse for being up and out on Sundays. so about a yea r ago he started ra cing. At first he gingerly made his way around in th e T urkey cla ss and only in th e mud whe re any fall would be at slow speed a nd well cushioned. By June he timidly mov ed to Open Junior where his speed , ability and confidence grew rapidly. Wonder if th e factories watch th e " O ver 40" gang? Leaders had their problems in both the Mini and 100 Junior classes . John Marks led the first Mini race until he laid. it down in the last lap . Sandy Darnell went by for that win and led flag -to-flag the second ra ce. Vim Chancellor led th e 100's, pushed all the way by Keith Blackman. At the white flag Vint got his pilot's license revoked when he got so sky bound he couldn't land it. The nose wheel buckled under ~ nd he flipped it". Keith landed right beside him with a dislodged chain. Gerry Schafer motored steadily through for the moto win . Jim Marks lost a lap mechanically in the first moto but took the overall. DavidJuba dominated 125 Junior as did Dick Rolli in 250 Junior; but the pack beh ind Dick was like a litter of kitt en s in a g u n ny sa c k.
