FEB . 13 Leading the .D-37 pack to the bomb , today was Chuck Pettigrew, with Bruce Ogilvie, about 100 yards back. Ogilvie drove in all the way from Saturday's Parker 400. ~n Arizona, 10 worked on his bike all morning, and squeaked in one run to the bomb prior to th e race. Third to th e smoke was Mark Zoller, chased by Ed Zarp. Tim Bowman and Dewayne Caner . Ru nn ing seventh overall and first Amateur was Dan Thordarson. Five miles up the .canyon. first and second stayed the same, bu t Bowma n got by Zoller for third while Carter passed Za rp for fifth. Sandy Robert son passed Thordardson for seventh, then Br ian Wright . who wasn' t even in the top 15 at the bomb. First Novice to the bomb was old Killer Kilgore , foll owed by Chris Gray, H oward Han , Da ve Thompson , Adrian Ahuero and Sam Soule. Phil Ba yliss was first Begi n n er , 18th overall. Before check two the "Killer" still had the Novice lead with Chris Gray second. Sam Soule moved up from sixth to third in really tight terrain. Crash Harvey. not even in the top 20 at the bomb. moved up to fourth Novice overall, second 250 . Dave Thompson dropped to fifth , First trailbike, Torsten Corum came blazing along at about 18th overall. .. . Bowman crashed, leaving third place to Zoller. The big downhill didn't cause. any problems to the fast guys. but later on the rehearsals for "Crash and Burn" bega n. Coming int o th e pits Ogilvie regained the lead , Pettigrew second , Zoller third . Thordardson fourth and Wright fifth . Killer Kilgore , still holding first Novice overall, was being chased by Mike and Dave Thompson , both on 175s. Mark Phillips held down fourth, w.hile fi.fth and sixth pla ce were ?pen bikes ndden by Greg Rudowskr and Brian Williamson . One-loop fin ishers stacked up real fast with Phil Bayliss finis.hing fi rst Open. first ove:all Beginner . Sec o n d overall. first Division I Begi n ner was Asaro . out ~f District 36. S~cond Open went to N.iglI Marshall. third Open Byron Smith. Second 250 was Mike Cockrell. third Rick Miller. First Div, II was Ron Hermansen, second Bill Bu rm an an? th ird Bob W a rd en . The only Trail Novice listed was Lars Bergmann , T he second loop continued with little position change. First and sec~md place must have been really senou;; because they pulled ~ut a five minute lead over the next bike. Bruce Jones held gown first 250 Amateur at tenth overall. Second place".Sled Rider Mick Thorpe. was 10 bikes back and moving. George Walker had first Senior Div. I locked ":,p, r,:,nning around 22nd overall. Jim Vincent , first Div, II ~pert ", running sixth overall at the big uphill . looked back to ~ Ji~ , Bro w!1 of ~arstow right behind him, Third Div, II Expert A d Kl ' bik es back n y em was seven . P"k hi h company with his bi e. smas mg t e expansion chamber, punching a hole in his ignition case and causing Zoller a world of hurt . This put fast -moving Br ia n Wright into third overall . Allen Johnson. back in the pack. brought home O pen Sen ior Ama te ur honors , whil e Don Kesler got first Div. II Senior Amateur. Irwin Sinclair won Senior Amateur Trail. With the finish line finall y in sight Ogilvie and the Harl ey ga ssed it to th e checkered for th e ?v erall win . Second overall Chuck Pett~grew also took first Open Expert. Third overall . second Mark Zoller ran third. crashed. Div. 1 was Brian Wright of the Checkers. James Vincent pulled in at fourth overall. first Div. II Expert . with Jim Brown still behind for fifth . Killer Kilgore led the whole Novice race . never really threatened for th e lead. Second and third went to Mike Thompson nursing a bad clutch and Dave Thompson riding a front flat the entire second loop . The Determination trophy of the week is split between Gordon Schmid and Ken Miller. Schmid fouled a plug on the start. almost quit. but decided since he paid his ent ry. he would go ahead and ride. Schmit! finished 40 · . something overall. first Open Senior. Ken Miller. running two bikes behind Brian Wright . broke his shift lever . A generous soul at Check 7 loa ned him o ne . and Mi ller cont in ued on . losing about 20 posirons. Ken Guio drove 1,000 mi les to race this desert race. He first raced this Moose. Run 25 years ago . fin ishing first Amateur. He 's been actively ra cing for 30 years. and his son Cotton finished 10th overall. second Open. Candon , the other son . was st ill in th e process of finishing when I left. They a ll drove down here , with Mrs. Guio , from Big Piney. Wyoming. Ron Bebo, competing for the first time since his ear operation. finished third Heavyweight Expert after getting off to a bad start . Fourth overa ll Novice 250 Mark Phillips said it. was a real good r ide " It m ade the rider work ." Second and third 250 Novice. Crash H arvey and Ch u ck Hermansen. didn't say anythi ng at all. Beg in n e r Daryl Melton , competing in his first-ever desert race, thought the whole t hing was really neat. His car pool pal, Pa ul Rya n , didn't fully agree. O ne t hing for sure.
