John "Action" Ayers rode his
Ma ico to a IO-m inute lead in a
two -hour , ra in -soaked cross
country race here at County Line
Borderland Motocross Park had
its last race under the managem ent of Randal Jones, befo re an
association to ok over. In h is last
race afte r four years of promoting at
Borderland, R andy ran a d esert race ,
som ething he has never done. Actually
it wa sn't a " re a l" d esert race - it was
the motocross tra ck and about 1.5
mii es through the desert.
O ne class of Experts and one class of
Amate ur ran sep arately with Experts
go in g for an hour and a hal f.
Amateurs ran a n hour.
Experts ran firs t and th e sta rt was
one of the best p arts of the race . It was
a dead engine st art with the riders at
th e front of thei r bik es holding the
handleba rs , with the f ront t ire
between their knees. When the fla g
dropped , sometim e after that a shot
gun fired a n d the r id ers took off.
Maby Mcintyre (Ya m) jumped on hi s
bik e and tried to sta rt it before the gun
fir ed . After Maby got a scolding from
the st arter - much to the delight of
th e sp ectators - the race wa s started .
Maby jumped in the lead as if it were a '
short ra ce - everyone else settled to a
good pace . When Maby took a p it stop
Scott Logston (Yam), took over the
lead and held it until he pitted a t the
halfway mark. Logston had a lot of
bike .p ro b lerns
including
the
handlebars falling down and took a
long pit st op . By the time he got go in g
again, he was in thi rd behind Maby
and Andy Palafox (Pen) who wa s
racing his first race in several months.
This is when Logston , wh o is in very
good shape, turned the gas on a nd
went to work. As Logston took the lead
with 20 minu tes to go, the wo rst injury
of th e da y took pa lce, No, it wasn 't a
rider - it was Mrs. Logston , Scott's
Mom , wh o was running to giv e Scott a
signal when she fell, cutting he r chin
bad enough to require stitches. But as
people tri ed to help her up, sh e said,
" Do n' t worry about me, gi ve Scott the
signal." Guess it was a good signal , as
Scott had a g o o d le ad at the
checkered flag. Dennis Patton (Yam ) ,
was plagued with bik e problems and
had to keep making pit stops, but
came in fourth .
After the Expert race was over,
Palafox protested. saying that
Mcintyre cut the track at two d ifferent
points lap after la p. No officials saw it,
so the results stood as they were.
The Amateur race fin'ished the wa y
it started . Chuck Vice on his 400
Yamaha jum ped into the lea d , Arnold
Peacock on a 250 Yamaha was second
and Dan Balkovetz (Yam) was third .

Billy Smith won the 250 class with
h is Yamaha, with Dana Wright (Bu l)
a nd Bruce Hallmark ( Pen) following.
Ron Lane beat Alan Blackwell and
Tony Bruce (both Yam) in the 125 Pro
class.

250 Maico to victory in the 250 Expert
class, with Larry Langley and Daryl
Mill er chasing. Teedy H ead (Suz) won
the 200 Expert class.
