II •._._._._._._._._. =Western s t deep mud. The emphasis was on fun so SCTA laid in an easy loop and simple sections that even. had the Experts paddling. Everybody rode the same sections except for the Begin ners and Kids who were excluded from sections two .an d nine. Section two was laid in wet guIly, which the riders had to cross , make a Ll-turn then jump into a wheel deep mud hole, jump a log in the middle of the mud hole, another Uvturn over the same log and o~t the exit. Number nine was a tricky off ca mber between the cactus. In the Senior class Marv Russel was number one with Joe Goodson runneru p . After watchi ng these guys paddle through the mud , they deserve a beer and a back rub. T he Kids were blown out of th e mud by litt le J o h n Sc hoon m aker fi nishi ng 33 points a hea d of Da rryl Sto n e. One kid had his min i Yam a ha bu ried clear up to the tank in the m u d. T he beginners h ad a time of it, lot s of paddling and pushi ng were the order of the day. M. Grant had some real nice rides to win the class over Don Corriveau. The show place went to Dan Waltz on his tiny Montesa 123. In the Novice class Paul Oswald was the winner with Phillip Cha n dler close behind. The wonderful Martin Argo, 'SCTA Vice President finished third Novice. In that class the competition was very close, as Chandler and Argo tied with 28 points. The tie was decided on cleans 23 to 20. T he Amateur class winner was Don Smith. Gil Smith (who is n ot related to Don) placed second. Da vid Webster dominated t he Expert class with b rother Mark in seco nd. Everyb ody enjoyed the trophies which were plaster plaques depicting a trials rider complete with tongue and rocks. Cred it for the trophies goes to Carol Stone who hand-pa int ed each on e . AIl the riders got real messy and had lots of fun, that's what it was all a bo ut . • R.A.C.£. Saturday HSMX to Charter Oak, 125s out in force By Elaine Jones CO RONA , CAL. ,JAN . 29 Cha rter O ak entered the Inland Em pi re Mot ocross Le ague with the overall team win . Yucaipa, with Bri an Myers cough playing 24 the workhorse, claimed second by one point over Cajon . Cha rt er O ak sta rted right off taking first and second in the I OOcc Novice. First place Richard Belanger made it three for three. Teammate Ryan Dow didn't have it so easy as he was tied with Cajon's Da rry l Lum battis going into the final round. Attrition problems struck down Da rry l giving the second to Ryan. The 125cc Novice feIl to Chart er Oak ne xt . Gary Vinson ha d a grand slam bu t this time Cajon rider Bill Easley nailed down second. T he final win for Charter Oak was garnered by Dave W entz in the 250cc Intermediate. Br ia n Mye rscough added the victories for Yucaipa as he picked up the 100c c Senior over Steve Dahle of Cha rter O ak and the I25cc Senior. T ro y Manning of Cajo n picked up his team's only win of the day as he held off Gr eg Severnson of Cha rter Oak in the 125cc Intermediate. The 125cc riders were out in force in the regular program, starting with ten eager Begi n ners. Scott Manning went three for three. Larry Clark started with a second in the 125cc Junior but moved upward from there picking up firsts in the next two. Alan Skiles was not quite as lucky as he watched his first fade away to third with the onslaught of Paul Schlosser who ended up second. Vincent Gonzales and Philip Taboada battled back in forth in the 250cc Intermediate. In the first moto it was Philip wire-to-wire with Vince second. Moto two saw Vince tum the tables as he led it from start to finish with Phil second. In the third moto it was Phil's tum to win even though Vince led it for one lap. Phil made his pass on lap two and went on to take it by one point. • Resul ts in Results Section. Hemet at Elsinore TT:Bowles triumphs By And i Gangewer ELSINORE, CA ,JAN . 29 It seems the whole City of Hemet was up for the Elsinore night TT scrambles. We even had a Hemet Cycle Center race. Jeff GiIlis led the way in the first moto and looked as if he would win , but Jeff Bowles and his 250 Bultaco began to reaIly put the pressure on. On the final lap Bowles turned it on and brushed ' past GiIlis on the sweeper. Dr. John Elehart was right behind Gillis and it was a blanket finish . The next Hemet race changed everything b ut the first p lace finisher. Lee Midgley wheeled his 250 Honda int o the lead. Lee tried his best to hoI off Bowles, but Bowles again too k th win by the skin of his teeth . Terr Carter was doing great the first half 0 the race, but little by little ride began to take over. Ric Emmal worke his way into the number two spot. L Midgley was third . The final moto looked liked Worl War III. Ric Emmal just barely kept hold on his lead. The pressure wa mounting from behind, from a unwelcome #9 who was not entered i the race but somehow found his wa onto the track and finished first. Ri received the first place points, course. Bowles couldn't seem to around Emmal and second was th best he could do. Bowles took the firs place trophy, Ric Emmal was secon and Terry Carter finished third. Three Novices and three Amateu joined together to form a 10 Com bina tion class. Lane Steeber, Novice from La Habra led the race fo one la p before Ken Mcintire too
