The first few bikes cleared the left hand sweeper below the start downhill before th e sound finally rea ch ed me, Cresting the first big hi ll th e lea der was Novice Joey Stockel on a red Honda , followed by Mark McFarland , and Sterl ing Hopson of th e Anaheim High Siders in third. Novi ce Ray Rodman was first 175 . Moving up fast from way down in the lineup wer e Torsten Corum of Simi on his 100cc YZ and J ua n Benevidez II of th e Brush Busters, both Novi ce riva ls in th e desert also. Severalride rs had trouble on th e first big uphill . whi ch caused much frustra tion and discontent. Jeff Leck ich of the In vad ers thought th e shortest distance between two points was a straight sho t. He d idn't quite clea r the ca nyon -:- his bik e was in one bush. jeffi n anot her. By thi s tim e the race was rea lly sp read out an d everyone sta rted ha ving fun. Ever since th e phrase " Desert ra cers ca n't turn ," not man y co m me nts were made about th e cou rse but th e look s on the fa ces sai d a lot. Joey Sto ckel held on to th e lead for th e checkered while McFa rla nd and Hopson finished second and third . First 175 went to William Whitner whil e first I 00 Novic e went to Juan Benaved es. Laura Maddox . competing again after her ordeal in th e des ert , didn't fare too well tod ay but she should have the cou rse wired for tomorrow . 100. 125. 175 J unior & Expert Getting th e ho leshot in race two was Expert Bil l Sa ndstrom (Suz) . About 100 yards back , Ji m Brown out of Barstow was followed by Holliday Honda rider Butch Darling of Barstow. Mote-Racer Danny Sanchez took fourth spot, all four moving at super fast speed. W ith the exc eption of James Brown and Bobby Carpenter (both 175 Exp erts). th e top ten bikes were 125s. Doug Martin . out of it for a whil e , moved his 100 Hodaka into second pla ce . 14th overall beh ind Mike Shoem ak er, who was first Trail Expert. D. L. Dorman was bu sy do ing hi s favorit e thing , running first Amateur Trailbike. Amateur 175 John Trani took his hot tip on how to sho rtcu t ca nyo ns from Jeff Leck ich , but didn't m ake it eit he r. Com ing into th e second section of hill s , Bu t ch Darl ing m a d e a spectacu lar m id -a ir pa ss of Bill Sundstrom. but was not able to pull awa y. Watch ing Darling . Sundstrom. Glore and Brand fly down th ose lon g down hill s was a real trea t. By Lap Three . Sundstrom regained th e lead , only to lose it for good by Lap Four. Jim Brown slac ked slightly off th e fast pace a nd Dann y Sanchez moved into third. Butch Darling wheelied towards th e ch eck ered flag with Bill Sundstrom second. First 125 Amateur was John Kubat . a nd first 175 Expe rt went to James Brown . Doug Martin bu zzed his Hodaka to first Trail Exp ert and D . L. Dorman was first T rail Amateur. Fox y lady Ch er ry Stockton, who finished .last week 167th overall , came in around 20th .
