It wasn 't long. however . before Desert Dude Ken Ba iley ca me up close enough to pass when Barney slowe d to loo k fo r one of those el usi ve stri ps of p lastic th at signa ls a turn off th e road . ( Everybody knows a co rner shoul d be marked by a fence. hay bale or a n ag m an .) At the end of the first loo p they ca me in like they were o n a tandem H usky with Ken doing th e steering . T hen . just at the end of t he MX course. Ken crashed and was out of it for the day . Busted desert bike. be nt a nd b ruised dese rt rider. you know . At the pits a m em ber o f Barney's pit crew was un aware of the "fast tim e" awa rd a nd adv ised him to coo l it with his fin: minute lead .
