passin g tourists . So is California 's
.legislatu re , ever-m indfu l of th e state's
im age in the eyes of hordes of paying
visitors. This is wh y the speed trap la w
is worded the wa y it is - to preven t a ny
agency within · the sta te from po sting
ridicu lous ly low speed limits and·
ge tti ng fa t off of fin es . We don't need
th a t ki nd of "en fo rcement." It stu nk
whe n the law was wri tten . and it sti ll
sti n ks . re gardl ess of wh at ev er
ex pe di ency there may be a ttached to
the 55 limit toda y.
What can you do about it ? Make
your local legislator aw are of the issues
in vo lved and th e hidd en cos ts .
Chances a re tha t he/ sh e wou ld vote
for radar only if kept in the dark about .
these things . Since literally thousands
of bills pour into the hopper each
session , the people you elect can't
possibly consid er all th e ramifications
of ea ch one. Under pressure . they'll
vote p urely on " h u nch" - o r on how
good the bill's sponsors make it so und.
Don't let them vote in the dark on this
baby, or we'll all be paying for it
sooner or la ter. Write on it. and write
now. Better yet, hunt up your
legislator's loca l office. drop in and
chat with the staff. It works, and it
costs far less than fighting ca p ric io us
speed ing tick ets issued under a
Federally- imposed "Quota: system ."
Make no mistake , that's wh ere it's
headi ng if you sit o n you r hands.
