Hannah took a super secure win a head of the DiStefano/Kessler duel with Grossi and Savitski rounding out the top five. _ . Round two saw Hannah once agam pull out to an immediate lead , but this time Marty Moates .j a m m ed his Ossa past the Hurricane to take first lap honors. DiStefano was in third ahead of Mickey Kessler, Billy Grossi and Mickey Boone. ' . While Moates and Hannah sailed on in front, Mickey Kessler moved up into third on the second lap when Tony D dropped to seventh. Grossi closely tailed' the sole Montesa rider, and when Mickey fell, Billy took over third. Kessler's throttle stuck open and the motor suffered the consequences. Mickey was out for the day after a promising.stan. Around 10 minutes inlo the race, Hannah regained the lead. He held it to the flag for a perfect I · 1 win . Moates fell , remounting to finish second. Mickey Boone came in third ahead of Tony D. Monte . McCoy .rounded out the top five for the moto. Open : Lumbe rjack outlasts , moto w inners Don Kudalski stole the first of his two Open class holeshots for the afternoon, leading a fierce duel between Danny LaPorte and Rick " L um berj ack" Burgett through the first lap. Florida's John Joyner, NML Winternationals Open Class Champion, rode in fourth . As in the first 125cc moto , Danny LaPorte appeared untouchable as he caught ' Burgett on the opening lap, then shot past Kudalski on the second. Once in the clear , he simply-ran away. With Danny go ne for good, "Killer" Kudalski established a - se em ing ly secure second pla ce lead over the three-way scramble am0l.'g DiStefano, Burgett and J oyner. The threesome broke up when Burgett jumped off in a muddy gully and DiStefano overshot the next turn . Then , when Kudalski crashed late in the rnoto, Burgett took second with Joyner third and Grossi fourth . Moto two saw another Kudalski 'holeshot with Burgett and Grossi close on his tail. Grossi overtook Burgett on the third lap. LaPorte dropped out with gearbox problems. Positons stayed fairly steady as the sun set mid mota setting the stage for an exciting duel at dusk between Grossi and Kudalski in the final laps. Repeatedl y blocked by lapped riders. Billy was unable to find the right line around " Kill e r" and time ran out with Kudalski winning over . Grossi , Burgett, Joyner and Joey Gratton. Senior Open Expert Dick Camp blew everyone's doors off. By the time he reached th e big uphill jump aftr the second wave sta rt , he was running 12th overall , well up into the ladies. By lap five , Trudy Beck was making her cha rge on Ch erry, passing Dick Camp. Rhia Helms fell down in the process of p assing Seniors, losing considerable tim e and position . Dawn Gram pr eviousl y holding third and fourth had to retire because of a rear flat tire . At th e finish , Cherry Stockton remained in th e lead wire to wire for first Division I Expert , first over all. Dick Camp re-passed T ru d y Beck for second overa ll. 250 Amateu r/Expert The 250 race got under way with motocrosser Danny Sanchez pulling out an incredible lead over secondplace Eddie Gonzales (Suz). Larry Roeseler, nursing a stiff left arm , held a distant third . You could feel th e exci tement in the air ' as Roes eler worked his way pa st Gonzales. By lap two , Larry made up some time on Sanchez when Danny spun ou t on a hairpin turn , killing his engine . Running fifth , Bob Rutten, rid ing with a strep throat , noticed Bru ce Ogilvie moving the Harley very fast. Thirty .ya rds back Jeff Kaplan was being pushed b y Brian Wright. Kaplan later-dove off an embankment while Wright entertained the home check fans with his stuck throttle routine. At 'th e start of lap four Sanchez chose to pit , leaving first to Roeseler. Bruce Ogilvie passed Bob Rutten somewhere in the back section. Roeseler didn 't realize that by turning fast lap times meant doing an extra lap . Larry ran out of gas but fast- footed friend Bob Massey carried him some gas to fini sh second overall behind Sanchez, and followed by Wayne Martin , Bruce Ogilvie and Bob Rutten . First ~ Amateur Larry Thompson put on a fine display of riding and finished well up in the standings. Second Amateur went to . Russ Jones, who also finished well. The Open Beginner/Novice race got underway after a slight delay, Steve Rogers led throu ghout the entire event , with second going to John Peterson. Third place went to Boh Bell.on a Triumph: T he first Beginner was Howa rd McCasland with Leroy Lefkowitz right on his heels . Desert " Donkey" of the week trophy go es to Dennis McClusky . Last year . the Donkeys had to fish Dennis' bike out of a tree. Right now th ey're .looking for a gen erous soul with scuba gear to help retrieve his 400 Mono out of this ne at lilli e pond. Open Amateur & Expert Max Eddy's KTM fired on the first kick and he led the pack down the big hill . In the first tum the second place r id er slid out in the _swe e p e r . relinquishing second to Craig Adams. with Goat Breker hanging onto third . Chuck Peuigrew held on to a strong fourth with a cruddy-sounding Maico . Fifth place Don Grigsby . was moving very fast through the turns and rock y' sec tions trying to close som e distance on Pettigrew. The first three Amateurs were all in a rowl Chuck-Conway. Jim Dawson and Jim Turner. Tom . Brooks, who had won a ORA ra ce at Red Mountain the sa me day, moved . up from the middle of the pack to about eighth beyond the first turn . Passing four more bikes, his brake . clipped an ernbankernent , pulling th e brake cable out of the adjuster . kn ocking him down and killing his engin e . . Restarting with no front brake , he hit a big berm too fast , crashed and called it quits. Lap three, saw -Br eker in th e lead , Edd y second and Larry Roeseler third . Chuc k Pettigrew, still in fourth . beat on the side of his bike in sheer d esperation, trying to make it clean ou t. On the fourth lap , " Ba rsto w" Ma x was back in first . Breker's front brake went south at the end of th e lap two but the gully gu y con tin ued on only t'; acquire a flat front. Goat decided to hang it up . On lap six, Roeseler assumed th e lead after Eddy d id a cliff diving act. Bill Saltzman rook over second with Mark Barnes running third . Chuck Conwa y, running a consist ent 12th. first Am ateur didn't dar let up as Tom Bullock and Jim Turner were mov ing right along. Larry Roeseler had his share of bad luck this weekend. J ust before Breker cashed it in, Larry went around the ai ling Kawasaki am! then proceeded to crash on a big berm landing on his a lrea dy damaged arm , but he still won. Second to the checkered, Mark Barnes gm by Bill Saltzman, who finished third . Chuck Conway completed a beautiful ride for first Am ateur, 12th overall , Second place went to Tom Bullock and third to Jim Turner. Roeseler's gas man , Bob Massey. lost his chain in th e weeds and couldn't find it. • 17
