Ron Turner had lost his ch ai n . but fortunately for him . it happen ed right in front of his pit m an wh o wast ed no time gettin g Turner back into the race. Reid . Richter a nd Jones were wa y ou t fro n t and lapping the rear runners when Jones go t by Richter. At this point in the moto , everyw he re you looked on the track th ere wa s a good race going on. Glo ver had come all the way up to -n inth by the time the chec kered flag came out. Re id took the win with Jones closing on him and Richter practically ' on top of J ones. A little further ba ck . cin their own race . Danny Turner. "'La Po rt e . J ennings. and Ron Turner ' fini sh ed fou rt h through seventh . LaPorte had the second moto sewed up . leading every lap . although Reid stayed close .' Behind that pair was a no t her battl e go ing on b etween Richter and Glo ver. The next pair ba ck was J ennings and Danny Turner . having th eir own ra ce . Ron Tu rn er was having b ike trouble . Ron Turner starte d out leading th e second 250 moto , but the onslaught from Magoo and Moates was too much . M ago o h ad o pe ned a tremendous gap over Moates wh en he crashe d . Magoo tried to get his lead ba ck. until the broken spokes slowed him down. H e still managed a seco nd a sa fe d istance ahead of T u rner. who wa s wa y ahead of fourth runner Kla ssen . Klassen had inherited th e position whe n Shultz cras hed ea rl y in the race . To continue a day of tough brea ks. Shultz h ad pulled the lea d in the firs t Open moto , o n ly to encounter a red fla g a nd a re -start d ue to p ro blem s with the sta rt in g ga te. Aft er the reo start. it took Shultz o nly a couple of laps to rea ch second be hi nd Gassin ' Ga ylon Mo sier. This time it was m echanical problems with the Bultaco that again put Shultz down . Lackey had been moving up . and kept moving until he caught up with Moates. who was determined to hold down his second place. It was a good battle. but Moates beat Lackey by half a bike length at the finish . Mosier had ~on by a long way . Mosier kept up the good work and took the secon d moto over Lackey as well . This time they both encountered resistance from Gary Ogden (FMF) and T erry Clark (Kaw). Shultz's luck ra n true to form . This time he DNFed with a broken ch a in. and wa s probab ly o ne of the m ost disappointed riders there . However . 27 ri ders wer e made happy with their • cash shares of the $5. 000 purse.
