; ., Z 's Hurt (Continu ed f rom pag e 5) The amount of info gathered for each in -depth ac cident inves tigation is, to an outside obse rver , stagge ring. Her e's wh ere the "m u lti -di sci pli n a ry" app roach comes in . Someone must know enou gh about a natomy a nd medicine to code multiple injuries int o a standardized com pu ter language without error. Somebody must kn ow enough a bou t helmet technology to pick headgear apart. They must know t r a ffic systems, po lice reporting tech ni ques , pho t ograph y . Da t a processing skills enter in , too beca use the entire ac cident gets cod ed in to over 500 data po int s for sta tistica l analysis. Running like a th read throughout, everybody has to know motorcycling to in ti ma tely . It ' s impossib le intelligently ask , or answer , t he typ es of questions on their acci dent reports without su ch knowl edge . This is because the questions themselves wer e des igned by someone with su ch a feeling for motorcycles that very little (if anything) of importance ha s been left ou t . As an example, the "en viro nm en tal factors" report goes into gre a t detail on road surface character - not just what it 's made of , but whether it's fresh and grainy or polished smooth, whether or not th ere are paint stri pes , grooves , surface cra cks, holes, • gratings , manhole cove rs. If it was wet , it's not enough to sa y "i t was wet. " How wet was it? Was there d ry pavement but wet paint st ri pes? W et pavement but d ry tire tracks? W er e there puddles , or overall flooding? In add ition , they check for vi e w obstructions, ca tegorize th e ro ad for both curvature and camber, note the " ro a d side environment" (g u tter s, curbs , road edge , obstru ctions , 'drop aways), and measure the braking friction coefficient of the road su rfa ce . They even go so far as to note the bug population . Now that speaks of intimacy with motorcycling! When they go in to vehicle fa ctors, this same painstaking detail carries thro u gh. They know enough to note if the bike was stock, chopped, cafe, or . d irt / en du ro . They completely cover types of tires and tread con d it ion going so far as to in clud e roadracing tires as a category , and knowing enough to spot tread wear th at comes fro m "severe cornering." They d o a com plete technical inspection of the bike when th ey ca n get a t it, noting .every piec e of equi p ment on it, every working cont ro l, dete rmin ing if it was func t iona l at t he time of the accident. W ere the brakes'locked? Did th e crash stick th e throttle open? W h a t parts of th e bik e inj u red the rid er (if a ny)? It 's all there. W h e re ridi ng exp ertise and judgement re ally co me down ha rd is in part of th e " hum an fac tors " section . The investigators ha ve to evaluate , in their own ju dge men t , wh ether th e evasive maneuver (if any) chosen by the accident-involved rider was the correct one, and wh ether it was performed correctly. That's heavy responsibility. As far as is known , this is the first time such questions have been formally st udied from a motorcyclists' standpoint. Even given the highly subjective nature of such judgement, it's hoped this will provide a kind of accident-prevention' data that's heretofore been simply non existent ou tside motorcycling's , inner circle. As mentioned before, " it don't come easy ." So far, they have worked up over 400 of the contracted 900 acciden t reports - they are a bo u t halfway home . Wha t they've fou nd ou t so fa r . as published in preli minary reports, a nd as related by Dr . H u rt and his crew , will appear nex t week .
