W hen the . 35 q ualified 125 riders got started for the first 30 minute m oto it was Ron Turner getting the ho leshot with Pat Richter (riding a Honda for Fox Shox) and Danny LaPorte on a sto ck Suzuki goi ng ou t fro n t. Before th e first la p was over. Bob by J ones ~ was up th ere too . and Warren Reid and Da nny Turner were moving up t hrough the middle . Glove r was having mecha nical problems again and pulled off. co ming back on the track dead last. W hen Richter slacked off the pace a bit , LaPorte took advantage , goi ng by R icht er and catchi ng Turner. Richter p icked up speed again and m ad e it a threesom e for a co u pie la ps. When this front group dropped into the horses hoe bowl , out of sight of most of the spectator knolls, th er e was a moment of suspens e wonderin g who would co me back into sigh t first. as LaPorte had looked ou t of co ntrol going in . Turner came out firs t. then La Porte , t he n Richter who almost immediately buzzed on by LaPorte to ta ke over second. Shortly afte rwards La Porte's Suzuki began seizing and he d ro ppe d back.
