How to recover your seat. (Continued from page 10) Husqvarna tached to another clutch hub (upper right of figure 3) which contains the other three clutches, one for each gear. It's also rigidly attached to th e shaft which drives that first input gear we talked about. Got it so far? The first gear clutch on the end of the crankshaft delivers the power to th e primary gears . The first input gear is att ached to the second primary gear by th e sh a ft (see upper right photo in fig . 3) on that sp line. First gear has been removed in the up· per right photo. Ir's shown in the cen ter picture . Now , through that first input gear, the power is passed on to the "ou tpu t" gears (lower left in fig. 3) . In t he pic tu re, the first output gear has been re moved to show the ro ller and oneway bearings. First through third ou tput gears h ave the bearings. As first gear is driven , a ll th e outpu t gears turn together as t he same speed since the one-way bearings lock -u p . Fourth output gear d oesn 't h a ve one -way beari ngs . It 's solid ly a ttached to the co un te rshaft whic h passes through the center of the output gear cluster. At this point , we're putting power to the ground in first gear. . As the speed of the gears inc reases , the output gears , which are constantly 'in mesh with th e input cluster, are feeding power back into the inp ut section . Since th e four gear sets a re different ratios . and the outp ut section is spinning at a constant speed , the input gears are obviously sp inning at d ifferent speeds . One by on e , starting with second. they rea ch a speed where their ind ivid ua l clutches engage with the drum . Remem ber that that drum is directly attached to the second primary gear. When the clutch engagement takes place, from first to second for example , the first input gear no longer is driving the output section -- second gear is. Since the second gea r set is a higher ratio than the first gear set. the second output gear begins spinning faster than the first output gear, and the one-way bearings between t he two begin freew heeling. At this point. the first gear set is sp in ning fr ee . It's not ?riving anyth ing . . the second gear set Reupholstering has always required an expert . .. and ti me! The only difference . from a practical rider standpoint, between bei ng in third or fourth gear is that fourth gear will provide some engine braking. , Fourth , as we m ent ioned, doesn't hav e one-way gears -- it's rigidly attached to the countershaft. As long as th e bike's speed is high enough to keep the fourth gear clutch - engaged , it's a rigidset up all the way through with no freewheeling when you back off the gas. In any ot her gear. the one-way beari ngs immediately react to throttle changes and, if encessary. drop you to the next lower gear. Even if a downshift doesn't take place, freewheeling does . No engine brak in g takes p lace except at higher speeds in top gear. Even after ru nning through all this with Burl eson, we were still skeptica l. It seemed like a n awful lot of monkeymotion , and we were a t least hal f convinced th a t we wou ld n' t like th e way the tra nsm ission fu nctioned in ac tua l practice. W e were wro ng. 'W it h the exce ption of h aving to learn more precise throttle control, we were in stantly pleased with the ride. It's not like any automat ic you've ever ridden or driven .
