The only probl em : Who 's in second ? BilI Francher tried but failed : and Mike Haas (H on) was second placer in th e second moto, but an eighth. in round one dropped him . Tom Bice (H on) was the most consistent , riding to a 4-3 score in both rounds to give him second OA. Duane Mapes (H o n ) switched positions with Bice to finish 3·4 for third. In the combined mini brigade, the Eversole-Barbacovi battle took center stage as both of the little hotshoes wenr over, under and around everybody in their wa y. chasing eac h other. With the first start going to Barbacovi, Ronnie Eversol e turned th e tables on the second gate as he got out front and ' proceeded to put on a "m ile wide" lead on his opponent . With a win ea ch , th e last mota was the decider, forcing both riders to berserk it on ea ch other as the start gate fell. Tony got the better hol eshot ahead of Ronnie , and from there on they ra .n head -tail as they lapped slowe r rid ers. Barbacovi maintained hisslim but forceful lead over Eversol e to win it. • Results in Results Sectiori. ' In th e first mota, Tom Wilson and Doug Reed were at each other constantly, with James Hateley and Cary Adams riding all out for third . In the second ~ mota Doug Reed had a second in h is first rnoto and was out for a first. This tim e Doug not only had Tom ~son to contend with but Andy Meszaros as well . Andy had a fifth in his first m oto and was really flying . to try and improve his overall position. Fly he did , around every' turn and over every jump' for 30 minutes, keeping the heat on Doug Reed, with Tom in third trying desperately to get by and take a cha nce at first : When it was fin ally over the checkered waved Doug Reed home to a beautiful three foot trophy and a first overall. Second overall going to Tom Wilson for a beautiful ride and third to Andy Meszaros who came back from a fifth and really rode a fine race. • Results in Results Section. - . the lead on the next lap and kept it all the way for the win , with Maxwell second and Fritz Schlegel (CZ) third : In the second rnoto Fritz got the holeshot a nd the first couple of laps, but could not hold off Wright . who went on for the win. J im my Wright (Mai) took over • 5 t SUNNYMEAD, CAL. ; DEC. 19 It was the last Su nd ay ' before ' Christmas and AMC drew a pretty good crowd to De Anza Cycle Park. Among the Experts who showed up to compete in the 250 Pro class were Larry Roeseler (who . came out of the desert with a '77 Husky) , Danny McDougal, ' and Steve Montague (who was just recovering from a sprained ankle) . The first three laps of moto one saw the lead change hand four times. Roeseler, however, did not waste time in breaking free from Suzuki-mounted Ken Zaylor and Montague. By lap six , he pulled a big lead and it looked great. But it was a 22 lap race and anything could happen. McDougal , who 'had crashed on the first lap, was . pressing his Suzuki to the limits. Determined to catch the leaders , he gave a spectacular show of racing skill . In less than half the race, he worked \ his way from 1 I th place to a solid second. Danny set his sights on the Husky man and closed the gap . Larry obviously thought he was still all by himself and was unprepared for McDougal's onslaught. On the 20th ' lap, Danny got by the unaware desert racer and managed to hang on to the lead all the way to the finish . Montague wasn't far' behind in third:' . The second round was a reversal of the first. It was McDougal who pulled the holeshot this time and Roeseler was back in eighth place. It wasn't long, though , before Larry cut his way through the pack and began to challenge Danny. By the sixth lap it was strictly a two -way battle. Lap after la p , Larry continued to pu.t the heat on Danny , .pa tien tly waiting for an opening. That opening didn't come until the very last lap. Larry squeezed his Husky by McDouj\'al to take the second moto and the overall victory. Results in Results Section. Yes, for only a b uck l ....... 1.,1111. 0 I Hey Cycle News!
