Canyon's first • • m,n,race By Lisa Lawrence I I I PHo"ENIX , AZ. , DEC. 19, 1976 ' Canyon- Raceway sponsored its first event for minis and were those boys ever excited! The kids were to race three motos with six Jon Derhammer pounds Ron (39) Turner Dec. 18 in the 250 Pro race at Saddleback. lasted throughout the entire moto, all the way until Clatk Jones made his final pass by Val Tamietti for the runner-up position, behind long gone Ron Turner, Derhammer again holeshot the second moto while Radical Ron quickly made his way by for the lead. Derhammer soon pulled off with bike problems, allowing Val Tamierti , Clark Jones , and , T.J, Warren into another battle for second. As the moto caine to an end , so did Tamietti's second spot, after Warren made the final move on Val and went on' to second 'overall, Clark Jones , followed Tarnietti to the flag in fourth position. Results in Results Section. . laps each. First place of each of these classes, would receive a three- foot trophy. In the Experts' first moto , Scott Reddell got the holeshot and pulled so far ahead that there was no hope for anyone else. The Amateurs got off to a good start with Philip Lawrence pulling the holeshot, but he was soon , passed by Mike Erwin. The two boys had a nice battle going there for a while, but when the checkered flag flew it was Lawrence. As the second moto started again with the Experts first , it' was Drey Dircks ' holeshor' but he soon hit Canyon 's tre achero us double jumps wrong and came to a scre aching halt. Lucky for Drey that he wasn 't hurt , but his mechanic was unable to get the bike running again, so Drey had to sit the rest of that race out. Mark Meredith didn't seem to mind that though , seeing as when Drey fell that moved him up to first and that was how he finished the rnoro. Amateurs were off again and so was Philip Lawrence as he holeshot for the second time that day. As the race went on though so did everyone by ' Lawrence. With Erwin on his tail again, Phil ip just couldn't keep him back there. Then from third came Bobby Downey, but he just didn't stop at second place, he went all the way for first and kept that pos ition until the end of the moto. Alas, our third and final moto wasn 't as exciting as I thought it would be , seeing' as a lot of the boys either had bike problems or else they just weren't feeling strong. Mark Meredith had no trouble this time pulling the holeshot and there he stayed for the whole race and (much to Troy Blake's dismay) that is how he finished overall, followed by Troy and then by Bret Bellett. • Results in Results Section.
